-9° at Sparta.

-8° at Burlington, WI

-1.4° here.

6° at Northerly Island

Based on trends tonight, Weds night will really tank. 12z Canadian had -10 to -15 along/west of the Fox River in IL and WI and that could be conservative in a few spots if there are no cloud cover issues toward Thursday morning.

Last winter we didn't drop below zero until Jan 22, and that was only at -2.  The coldest temp of the season last winter was -3 on Feb 1st.  Tonight we've already been as low as -5, with the potential to go down a few degrees over the next hour or two.  Thu morning may be even colder than tonight.  We're definitely off to a much colder start to winter to be sure this season.

The big tornado outbreak of 3 weeks ago seems like a distant memory with this cold weather.  It would take a while to figure out but I wonder how often any place in this region has had tornadoes and below zero temperatures less than a month apart.

Yeah it's gotta be rare to go from a PDS tornado watch/tornado outbreak to subzero temps in such a short time.

I know it's probably getting overstated.....but what a difference a year makes....

SHORT TERM FORECAST
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL
713 AM CST TUE DEC 10 2013

.NOW...

SNOW SHOWERS WILL MOVE ACROSS AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF THE
INTERSTATE 80 CORRIDOR OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THE INTENSITY WILL
PRIMARILY BE LIGHT...THOUGH BRIEF PERIODS OF MODERATE SNOW ARE
POSSIBLE. GIVEN THE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES...IT WILL NOT TAKE MUCH
FOR A DUSTING TO POSSIBLY A TENTH OR TWO OF SNOW TO ACCUMULATE IN
SOME SPOTS. IN ADDITION...WINDS WILL INCREASE...SO THE FALLING
SNOW AND SNOW ALREADY ON THE GROUND IS LIKELY TO BLOW AROUND A BIT
AND COULD REDUCE VISIBILITY...ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS. MOTORISTS
ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTRA CAUTION.
