Picked up enough snow this morning to coat the icepack.

Yep. Looks fantastic out there today with snow covered ice surfaces especially on trees. Took this picture yesterday afternoon after light lake effect snow accumulated on what ice remained after several hours of 2c temps on Sunday.

CR airport hit -18F this morning.  Most places in Iowa that just got the snow were in the -15F to -22F range.  Here in the city most of the stations were in the -10F to -12F range.  The high school I went to is up on a hill and it was -9F while the high school by the river was -16F.  I wish I had a good weather station in my yard so I knew the exact temp, but I do live in a lower area so I probably hit -12F.

Cyclone- I just use a cheap Farm/Fleet La Crosse wx station and it seems to be almost dead on with the airport that is just north of me.  I hung it on a cherry tree that is shaded all day a few feet off the ground.   Mine read a low of -11.6F and the airport shows -12F,,,

Still only in the single digits...   nice day out with sunshine and almost no wind.

Yeah many of those cheaper stations are actually pretty accurate at night, as long as they're not 3" off the ground, up on a rooftop, mounted on a building etc.  As long as it's out in the open around 6' above the ground it should be very accurate.  During the daytime though is where most people run into issues with accuracy.  Even in shaded areas reflected light/radiation can still impact temps.  A good thermometer shield, such as some of them sold on ambientwx fix that problem.  An aspirated temp sensor is even better, but I found that the unaspirated sensors are usually pretty close, unless the wind is dead calm on a hot day.  Even then the temp may only be a few degrees too hot.

Torching here at 5 above.  Clouds starting to thicken up as the clipper creeps towards the area.

Torching at 15° here.

Still no clouds. On the tree issue. Around here not a lot of trees have needed to be cut due to disease. Some did have to be cut in the immediate area and to the east a couple summers ago when microbursts/thunderstorm activity made a mess of everything. Mostly around here there is several different kinds of Oaks, Maples, Conifers, Aspen, Willow, many different small trees/shrubs. I have lost some Paper Birch in the last 4 years, which I think is more due to old age than anything.

I know the Asian Longhorn beetle, and emerald green ash borer were more of an issue in older neighborhood to the south that contained a lot of hardwood trees. There is hardwood trees around here, but they're spaced out with softwoods in between.

Also picked up about 0.5" of snow last night, looks great on the ice coated trees. Got some great shots today of the ice in full sun, looked gorgeous. Maybe I'm greedy but a part of me is happy that there's a lasting ice coating, it's really a sight. Still about 1/3" of ice on trees imby, drove up to Vaughn and there's still over an inch of ice in places. Hopefully it doesn't get windy any time soon.

Car thermo read 13F, a rough reality for the ten's of thousands in the GTA without power tonight.

yeah....the spacing is very useful as it gives some time for the ash predators to fight back a bit and feed....Paper birch was always my fav since I was a kid...and nice sunset pic!!!

17 degrees and the winds have kicked up a bit the last 30 minutes....although I was inside for a decent chunk of the afternoon/evening

Cyclone-

For awhile it was nuts up here...like a real snow storm.  I'll have to shovel in the morning.

Nice.  Gotta love snow on Christmas eve.

IIRC we had a big snowstorm on xmas eve in either 96 or 97 that dropped about 8" of cement in 9hrs.  Ripped heavy snow from late afternoon through mid-eve.

EDIT:  Here's a loop.  Guess it was '97

I remember that one well! There was a lot of virga in the beginning - I think like 3 hours worth. Dropped 5 or 6" here.

That's a good amount too for Christmas eve.  I remember doing some last minute shopping that morning, and stopping at Wendy's for lunch.  While at Wendy's it started sleeting like hell, and by the time we all left the sleet was starting to mix in with big fatties.  Wasn't long before it was ripping.

Merry Christmas everyone! :santa:
