Had 0.2" of snow this morning. Obviously still just a T on the ground, so it wont be an "official" White Christmas but light snow does look to fall much of Christmas day and Christmas night, so I guess thats actually exactly how the "I only want snow on Christmas day" general public dreams it up. Its funny actually...we had a blanket of snow on the ground this year from Dec 9-22, peaking at 9", but it won't be a "White Christmas". Last year, we had literally NO December snow til an inch fell on Dec 21st, which slowly withered away and then an inch Christmas Eve night saved us and gave us an official "White Christmas". Yet....the weather had so much more holiday spirit this year than last, if you look at Christmas as a season not a day. With this mornings dusting of snow, DTW is now at 12.0" for December (12.5" imby) so an above normal snowfall December has actually long been guarenteed (avg Dec snow 9.7"). Merry Christmas Eve to all!

my subdivision is about 25 years old...every other tree was an ash tree... :axe:

Those ash borer things already kill a lot of ashes up there?  There's still a ton of them around here, but apparently a few of those borers have been spotted down here now, so it's only a matter of time till they start dying around here.

The city of Fort Wayne had to cut down thousands of ash trees in their tree lawns and parks. The ash population has been devastated around here.

Same with all over Metro Detroit. The problem was when the Dutch Elm disease hit this area and they had to cut down thousands of elm trees they replaced them with the ash trees as they were heartier.

-11 here this morning, coldest of the season.  DVN hit at least -15.

Nice.  Here are some lows from the LOT CWA.  UHI wasn't as much of a factor as it normally is, due to the persistent winds.  As expected, the lowest temps occurred over the more heavily snow covered areas to the N and W.

yeah....really depressing this fall actually....I loved the way our streets used to look with all of the bright orange, red, and yellow umbrellas over our streets....2012 we had all the trees and only one in our subdivision looked like it was carrying (struggling a bit)....by the time we hit fall this year, over half our ash trees were 75% dead....and of those, they have already chopped down half.  Depressing difference from last year to this year.  The one in front of our house was only about 35% dead....so they injected it.  Hope it makes it.

Fortunately the rest of the trees on our lot are maples, long needle pines, spruces, and river birches...so the rest should be fine

I have heard a similar scenario in quite a few spots....unfortunately that just fed the beast and sped up the spread.  In the case of our subdivision....they planted the ash to make things look mature faster.  That is fine, but they should have used them perhaps every fourth tree...or even every other tree...not 2 out of every 3 trees along the parkways.  Oh well....

Wow, that's crazy.  Must not take very long for them to kill a tree.

This town is full of hackberry trees, which is very similar to elm but is more resistant to the dutch elm disease.  I'm thinking they must have replaced the dead elms with hackberries after the elms died off as sort of the next best thing.  Also a lot of siberian elms, which are resistant to the disease.  Problem is the siberian elms are messy trees, and are easily damaged in storms, etc.

Woke up this morning to bare grass and a forecast for up to a half inch of snow ... 6 hours later after a nice lake effect band moved in, almost 5" fell in a few hours ensuring a white Christmas. Got to love these little surprise events. Not even an advisory was issued.
