Well I just maybe going to Boyne on Monday!!

I always plan a UP trip in late Feb, but if its a great snowpack in Jan I may go up north somewhere (on vac Jan 18-27). Had a very nice snowpack going here but its thawing away.....plenty more snow to come, but just a bit too far south to be sustaining a deep winter snowpack.

We are now at 32 hours and counting above freezing, after being over 13 days below freezing. Still a full snowpack, but its down to a very very heavy 3" overall (several 4" spots).  The snow depth pre-warmup was 8". Really wishing for an ice storm tomorrow night so its not fully washed away but my hopes arent high. The many large snowbanks will remain and with all the water that will be added I suspect it may be a case similar to last March where they will be mountains of rock-hard ice.

It is UGLY outside ... sorry even if this 3" of crap is still there on Wednesday it will be hard for me to call it a 'white' Christmas.  If we can get some fresh on top than I am good.  With this current snow pack I would call it a Crusty Christmas :grinch:

CLE has not had a 6"+ snowstorm in 3 years. There have been several close calls around 5" but nothing officially over 6" on the west side of town where the airport is located.

almost like Detroit "stole" Clevelands 6" storms lol. December 26, 2012 we were forecast 3-5" and DTW got 6.2", while Cleveland, if I recall, was forecast 6-10" and got 5.5". December 14, 2013 we were forecast 4-6" and DTW got 7.7", not sure what Cleveland was forecast (6-10?) but I see they had 5.1".

It's funny how many people just don't understand this area even on the coldest winter rarely maintains a deep snow pack!!  I keep hearing back in the day stories ... then I show them we don't get winter's in this area that temps stayed below Freezing mid-Dec to mid-March.

It sucks because we had deeper snow than you (my depth was 9" for several days) but in turn we got warmer today so actual depth is probably the same now. Its funny, you can actually draw a line where the 8-10" snowpack was (SE ARB to DTW and south to Monroe county) and thats where the warmest temps were today. Every corner is lined with large gray mountains of snow, and I admit its not appealing. We see these snow-thaw-snow-thaw cycles most winters, and each time a lot of people say its getting ugly so might as well wipe it away and start fresh (often times, sans piles, we do)...but I want to clarify something. When I pine to keep a snowpack it is NOT to look at dirty crusty snow . Its all about the base. You get a fresh half inch of snow (very very easy in these parts lol) on a crusty old snowbase and its an instant winter wonderland once again. You get a half inch of snow on bare ground and its a dusting of snow.

Those "back in the day" stories GRATE on my nerves!!!!!!! All you have to do is look at historical data to prove them wrong. Ive actually a few stubborn older folks (relatives of a relative) who i have had the argument with for years that it doesnt snow as much as it used to, well I FINALLY have gotten them to say "well it does seem like it snows more now" (all it took was epic snow from 2007-2011 for them to admit as much lol) but they add that it "seems like more because the first snow would be laid down in November and wouldnt melt til April, so it had all winter to add up". :axe:

While on the subject...a side note....in December 1977 we had a snowy first half of the month, complete with two 6.4" snowstorms, and a depth peaking at 11"...then Januay 1st started one of the harshest (cold+snow) months in the midwests history, and the deep snow and bitter cold stayed through march. Christmas 1977...drumroll...was NOT a White Christmas!

A brown Christmas will be worth a very snowy January. To think Winter is just starting and we have already had a 10" snowpack !!!

Great news for someone like you. We had numerous salt-requiring snows in Nov and early Dec, then a deep plowable snow in mid-December, a few more salt snows, and now rain or ice you almost surely will have to salt Sunday (flash freeze?). And winters just begun!

are you expecting a total loss of snowpack?

Its all going to depend on what the storm does. Lots of big snowbanks will be around for sure, but as for losing the actual snowpack, if its a 33-35F rain I can see it being washed away (but the ground is frozen so its a mess, but if its more of a 31-33F rain maybe it will glaze it over in ice.

Ok, I will note that. Thanks for the info.

Still would qualify as a white Christmas here. -ZR/-RN has been minimal here.

Already 10 dates in the log book. Many have multiple plows and saltings. Using a new salt this season which is enriched with Magnesium Chloride. Seems to work good in reducing the amount of salt required at colder temperatures and it softens the bond of snow to road surfaces.

Last weekend's storm was forecasted perfectly here (4-7" was consensus for a good 3 days out).

I always love your pictures, Josh. They tell a story. I drove past Detroit tonight and it looks like you guys lost A LOT of your snow in a day.

Thanks. Yeah we lost a lot. Constant temps of 35-40 and near 100% humidity for 36 hours straight will do that. Depth was 8" Thu morning, 5" yesterday morning, and a very very heavy (3-1 type ratio) 2" this morning.
