26 years ago this morning we had just been dealt a tremendous blizzard.  I was only 10, but I'll never forget the ferocity of that night.  At times it was like a severe thunderstorm, but with heavy snow.  We received around a foot of snow, which is less than what we got with the GHD.  However, snow to water ratios were lower than with the GHD storm, and the snow didn't fall as long.

DVN posted this little summary on their fb page this morning....

On this date back in 1987...A major winter storm hit the Great Lakes Region. This storm explosively intensified as it crossed Northeast Illinois. High winds and heavy snow created blizzard conditions across Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Winds gusted between 75 to 90 mph, and snowfall totals up to 12 inches fell across the area. This storm downed power lines, and produced considerable snow drifts that resulted in numerous roads being closed. The barometric pressure at Chicago IL dropped to to 28.96". This storm system was so unique that thunderstorms were associated, with a period of 2-4 hours of thunder and lightning. Snow was falling at a rate of 2"/hr at the height of the storm, with a high water content. This storm was responsible for 26 deaths in the Chicago area.

That was a good one.  LAF had some snow on the 14th before changing to rain and then back to snow on the 15th.  Peak gust of 69 mph on the 15th.

MDW: 8.6" of snow on 1.44" liquid and a peak wind gust of 58mph on the 15th

ORD: 9.1" of snow on 0.70" liquid and a peak wind gust of 64mph (*see ob below) on the 15th

Snowing at 3-4 inches per hour last 2 hours. Picked up close to 6 inches so far and can't see end of my driveway atm.

I have to ask, when and where is that picture from in your signature?

My mother told me today that this reminds her a lot of the '78 - '79 winter...now she isn't a weather guru like most of you....she is just looking at it from a perspective of what has happened thus far and what is forecast over the next week via networks and the sunday paper....and she is obviously looking at it from a MBY perspective, not a regional or national perspective...just thought it was interesting

Chalk up another day that felt like winter for MBY....this winter sure has come in like a lion between temps and snowfall occurrences.  I'm sure someone could dig up the number of days that saw flakes flying in their backyard (not necessarily accums)....and it's prolly a good number if you are in this subforum
