Moderate snow right now as a large lake effect band sinks south with the wind shift ahead of tomorrow's storm system.

Pretty decent rates out there!

NWS calling 1-3" with that band for my area  :snowman:

NOW...OFF LK ONTARIO...

THE PLUME OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW IS MAKING STEADY PROGRESS SOUTH ACROSS

OSWEGO COUNTY...STILL CLIPPING THE SOUTHERN END OF LEWIS COUNTY. IT

HAS MOVED FAR ENOUGH SOUTH TO DROP JEFFERSON COUNTY FROM THE

WARNING. THE BAND WILL DROP SOME HEAVY SNOW FOR A FEW HOURS ACROSS

WAYNE AND NORTHERN CAYUGA COUNTIES WITH A QUICK 3-5 INCHES POSSIBLE

THERE. THE WESTERN EXTENT OF THE BAND WILL LIKELY BE CAPTURED BY THE

ADVANCING ARCTIC FRONT AND MOVED BODILY SOUTH...WHILE MAINTAINING

ITS EAST/WEST ORIENTATION. THIS MAY BRING A QUICK 1-3 INCHES

ACCUMULATION TO MOST AREAS ALONG AND NORTH OF THE

THRUWAY...INCLUDING ROCHESTER AND EVEN DOWN TO BUFFALO. THIS BAND

WILL LIKELY CONTINUE SOUTH AND EVOLVE INTO A BRIEF UPSLOPE SNOW

EVENT FOR THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE SOUTHERN TIER AND FINGER

LAKES...WITH AN INCH OR TWO LIKELY THERE THIS AFTERNOON.

what a start to the winter it has been in the north country.

i have gotten more use out of snow tires in 3 weeks than  i had all of the last 2 years combined. its almost as if i cant go out without the threat of a surprise squall. not getting big amounts by any means here in N vermont by the lake, but the conditions on the roads have been nasty thanks to the persistent cold temps up here. everryday has felt like an adventure. helped that i went up to ottawa last week

it has been nothing short of mid winter weather there since mid november.....with the snow and cold combined, would have to say its one of their harshest starts to winters in eastern ontario in years....unfortunately there have been a high number of traffic deaths already.

with the temps below zero here tonight, and a frigid storm on the way tomorrow that is sure to leave roads a mess again, i might just end up camping out at work all wekeend lol

Was surprised to see the band made it all the way from Lake Ontario to KW. Not too sure if that happens very often. We picked up a quality coating of 0.5-1cm of pure fluff during the thick of it.

This current storm made for the third 6" or greater snowstorm here in 2013. Last time that happened in a calendar year was 2007. Very good for LAF, considering climo.

I know we average less than 1 six inch storm per winter but I wonder what the average is per calendar year.  I'm guessing it would be 1 or 1.x per calendar year, so very good indeed.

You may be right, but I don't know exactly. But they seemingly come in bunches lately.

Actually now I'm not sure if my post made sense.   It's a different way of grouping things but wouldn't the average number be the same?

lol, I was a little confused by your post to be honest. I don't think it matters, true. It's at about once every two years for LAF, on average.

Was at the in laws house all day in the hills of South Eden. Took the dog for a 2 hour walk in some really deep snow with my wife. We had a blast and the dog had even more fun. Took a video and a few pictures while on our adventure! Hope you guys enjoy! Average snow depth was less than I thought with around 14-17 inches on the ground. The fluffy nature of Lake Effect Snow compacts very easily in comparison to synoptic systems that's for sure. We have received around 6 inches from this storm so far and still ripping outside.

Running threw the snow with the dog, awesome workout!

My cousin just sent this to me of how much snow in northwest side of Buffalo. To show you the comparison between 3-4 miles north of Buffalo and 15 miles south of Buffalo.

26 years ago this morning we had just been dealt a tremendous blizzard.  I was only 10, but I'll never forget the ferocity of that night.  At times it was like a severe thunderstorm, but with heavy snow.  We received around a foot of snow, which is less than what we got with the GHD.  However, snow to water ratios were lower than with the GHD storm, and the snow didn't fall as long.

DVN posted this little summary on their fb page this morning....

On this date back in 1987...A major winter storm hit the Great Lakes Region. This storm explosively intensified as it crossed Northeast Illinois. High winds and heavy snow created blizzard conditions across Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana. Winds gusted between 75 to 90 mph, and snowfall totals up to 12 inches fell across the area. This storm downed power lines, and produced considerable snow drifts that resulted in numerous roads being closed. The barometric pressure at Chicago IL dropped to to 28.96". This storm system was so unique that thunderstorms were associated, with a period of 2-4 hours of thunder and lightning. Snow was falling at a rate of 2"/hr at the height of the storm, with a high water content. This storm was responsible for 26 deaths in the Chicago area.
