Here's an off-topic question for a topic about being off-topic, what's the difference ( if there is any ) between rain/freezing rain vs freezing rain. I noticed this on TWC and I don't know how the rain and freezing rain could switch like it seems like it means.

Maybe they're not sure what will fall?  Or they think there will be a transition during the forecast period?  Usually freezing rain is defined as occurring whenever it freezes on some surfaces.

Yea, sorry I was just a bit lazy to take the minute or two to google it.

Let's hear what you find..it is a light refraction thing (as I suppose all perception of color is)?!

The short answer is that the red and yellow light gets absorbed, leaving blue. More likely in greater depth of snow or a deeper hole in snow, more "filtering" occurs. I found that here: http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/5C.html

Good stuff, probably similar to the shades of blue observed in tropical ocean waters!

A Winter Weather Advisory for black ice?  I noticed this on the NWS website map and don't ever recall seeing a WWA for conditions based on refreezing.  It's a risk, of course, but it's usually issued as a Special Weather Statement, no?  Wouldn't this be a risk for the Philadelphia area and much of the East Coast after yesterday?  Isn't it a risk every time we have a snowstorm, melting and refreezing?

To me this is actually a road condition advisory rather than a weather advisory.  Any ideas why Upton issued this and why other NWS offices choose not to?

So I noticed yesterday while shoveling, that blue tint down in the crevices between chunks of snow. A long time ago I read an explanation for it but I don't recall what it is. Anyone else observe this yesterday?

Noticed this as well...but the phenomena left after yesterdays slopfest

Feel like i live on a glacier it is a shame we have lost the weekend snow, even a smaller SECS would have created quite an impressive ground cover. Guess i can't complain too much about a winter that is now ranked #5 all time for me since 1978 not to mention it's a needed break for the tens of thousands that don't have power possibly going into the weekend

#1 1996

#2 1978

#3 2010 (many will dispute this to my south but only 60" imby)

#4 2003

#5 2014 * jury still out

#6 1994

#7 2011

#8 1987

#9 1979

#10 2005? several winters really fit in this slot

A pattern developing there since 2000

Just gotta love the mid atlantic forum. They had the February 8-10 storm labeled "the unicorn storm", then changed the thread title to Feb 8-10 on life support. Once it was decided it was lost for good it is now "on death row"....awesome. I'm almost glad it's quite around here at times.

Edit:

Stomtracker with an epic quote: "...we're done here, last person turn out the lights..."
