Here in the West, snow is a good thing in its correct place (the mountains), where its vital for water supply and of course also important for the ski industry.

Back East, its just simply not really important for water supply, and the ski industry is not as important especially outside of the mountains, so for the vast majority of people, big snow is bad.  I mostly see groans among my friends on Facebook, for example, when I mention snow is coming, at least outside of that very first one or two.  The average person sees snow as a big pain in the butt.

Ray, point taken. It has to do with the audience you are speaking to.

I'm sure that anyone who likes snow in this part of the world is very aware of being in a small minority.

I suppose that's one of the reasons for the "rampant snow weenieism" that occurs in this forum at times. :o

There aren't that many places you can go and say "I sure hope it snows", or "Yeah Baby, high five on that Miller B we just had!" without being looked at like you have two heads.

I should have been more explicit in the original post on this subject, but one scenario I can imagine is a snow loving TV met giving a forecast for say 6 to 12" of snow and being told afterwards, "Dude, tone it down a bit. Do you have to look so happy and excited telling us we're going to get a foot of snow?" I would find a story like that amusing.

I had made a thread regarding a serious wintry threat between the 26th and 28th and it must have been deleted. Anyway, the models are now onto this and showing a beast the gfs most notably has a coastal crawler during this period. Pattern changes and along with it comes a storm to usher in the arctic air return. Something to keep an eye on. I have particular interest in this as I will be away during this range on a trip so we can bank on this threat materializing. More later.

I'm fairly certain what you describe has indeed happened, probably multiple times.

Split flow occurs when a ridge sits over the western US, with a trough to the south, which is a blocking pattern.  The jet stream features a very noticeable "split" with some energy sneaking south and the rest going over the top.  A split flow tends to favor a trough in the east, which obviously is favorable for snow.

Ridge bridge is a ridge stretching across the North Pole.  It tends to mean a negative AO and is more favorable for winter storms (blocking).

That's great, thanks a ton famartin. I just went on google and found some great pictures of a split flow, but couldn't really find any of a ridge bridge. Do you or anyone else know where I can find one?

I apologize in advance, but while you are waiting for the real answer, I thought I would offer this (a bridge on the Blue Ridge Parkway):

I feel this forum has the least amount of Weenies and weenieisms, well not including the mid Atlantic forum where there is little to none.

Well I suppose I'm speaking more for myself since I don't have a lot to offer when it comes to teleconnections, patterns, analogs, model analysis, and an in depth understanding of what I would call atmospheric dynamics. I've just about always been interested in the weather, but only recently (last year) discovered this forum and a host of other resources that didn't exist many years ago. So while I'm learning slowly, I can definitely do snow weenieism. Maybe there are different definitions or degrees of it, I don't mean it in a negative sense (though it might be annoying to some  :yikes:).

Kamu', you handle yourself very well here and definitely don't come off as a weenie. I liked your original post referencing the change of emotion during a change in a snow forecast. It used to irritate me also when I used to watch TV Mets, thankfully for other medium such as this board ands other social media wx based sites it no longer an issue. You checking in here daily is a contribution to the board, asking questions others may not want to ask....no way dude/dudette you're a contributor to this board. If anyone is a weenie in this forum, it's me. The emotions I go through during a potential moderate snow storm...I could rival the great Ji in the mid Atlantic forum. I just hide behind smartphone / keyboard lol. We need to grow this forum back to where it once was.... and having the crew we have is a step in the right direction. By the way, I just found out how to read a sounding, so I wouldn't let what you dont know weather dictate whether you are a non-contributing weenie or not.
