Tropopause_Fold
At hour 216 single didgits from Boston to DC, maybe lower teens. Interior is an incebox. Most of PA is below zero. Pitt is -5 to -10F. oh yeah i know it's cold...i guess i was just commenting on the "historic" part. i don't know the records off the top of my head (we can find 'em quick obviously) but to me, even breaking a couple of records here and there doesn't really constitute historic. perhaps those numbers are record-smashers everywhere. i'd be surprised if they were, but i could be wrong. Well for example the record low for Pittsburgh, PA for all of December is 2 degrees. The euro has temps in the -5 to -10 range. Interesting to note that the record was set on December 13th 1988. CT Rain
Euro 2M temps seem out to lunch when the model predicts snow on the ground. They seem way off base to me given the unimpressive synoptics.

CT Rain
ummm since this weekend all i am hearing is pacific air flooding the CONUS in days 11-15 Yeah... and? We're talking about D6-D10 for this cold shot. Either way, it looks like CONUS turns milder in the D11-D15 period.... that doesn't mean your specific location immediately blow torches. It's a pattern discussion not an IMBY deterministic forecast.

NYC is over 300 miles east, but they hit -13 on 12/30/17 and -6 on the same date in 1933, also reached zero on Christmas Day 1980. It would be odd if Pittsburgh never got down below zero on those and other December days.

They seem way off base to me given the unimpressive synoptics. I certainly wouldn't take any output verbatim at 216 hours, but if we did indeed have snow cover, then I think we'd get darn low under that high it shows...its source is the Canada/N Plains, and while 850mb begins to modify a bit, the lower levels probably would be slower to do so with snow cover the whole way on its path. The 850mb temps just 24 hours before that sfc prog are -20C over much of the Midwest and Lakes/PA.

Appears much more logical, thanks. I'm guessing the AP records don't extend back thru 1917. A lot of coop stations came "on line" on 8/1/48. If Pittsburgh's is one of those, it also misses 1933 abd the most recent (IIRC) Dec sub-zero for NYC, in 1942.

CoastalWx
Everybody wants every winter day aob. Not gonna happen but on balance IMHO it will be cold. Of course, but it seems sanity sometimes takes a back seat in here. I love winter as much as anyone. Summer can suck a big one for all I care....this is what I live for. It just seems lately if your not all cold and all snow all the time..you're an outsider. I also see some horrible reading comprehension. Talking about what models show doesn't equate to a forecast.
