If the overwhelming signal for a colder than normal winter comes to fruition in the Lakes, as Bill Deedler suggests, we would be looking at a spectacular winter recreation season throughout the region. Should his ideas come to fruition, for example, Detroit snowfall would be in the normal to slightly higher than normal range (40-50") but with temps 1-4F below normal, we can extrapolate that we are looking at well above normal snowcover. This obviously would be all the better in the snowbelts, and thats a snowmobiler/snowboarder/skiier/sledders dream. Perhaps we could be seeing a massive snowpack this winter in the U.P. A friend builds an outdoor ice rink, and while he likes snow too, for instance, he would take a 40" cold winter over nearly 80" and the constant thawing-refreezing his rink saw in 2007-08. Of course I certainly hope a few bombs are sprinkled in there as well. A 1977-78, 1981-82, or 2010-11 is the all too rare combination of bitter cold AND heavy snowfall.

The one thing about last winter was that the UP snow depth was so deep, its statistically unlikely to be topped this year. Lets hope for a steady winter.

I would rather finish up with a positive departure and no mega torches, than a winter with huge cold spells and torches.

Went coat shopping for the kids tonight. Hard to find smaller snowmobile outfits in these parts for ten year olds. I'm thinking to stock up early for the winter stuff, for it has been two years since I wore a proper winter coat. Something is telling me to shop extra warm this time around.

Talking about sports (and this is slightly off topic), both the Winter Classic and Super Bowl will be played in cold-weather cities in the winter.

I hope there are snow showers for the Winter Classic, I'm not sure what kind of weather I'd like to see at the superbowl.... If the lions aren't in it, Freezing rain.

Btw, just got back from Dee's Marine with my new sled. Both myself and my riding buddy will be rolling new 137 inch track sleds this winter. Lets hope Saturday, Sunday pans out.

Congrads on the new sled. What did you pick up from Al over there? My wife, son and I all have Skidoo 600 Renegades, I can't see us ever going back to short track sleds. Lets hope we get enough snow this season so we need the long tracks. The way it's looking, we might have enough snow to ride on again this thanksgiving up at our cabin, that will make two years in a row.

Yup, it was Al.... That was the first time I have ever been to that store and I was impressed, much more accessories in stock than C&C sports, my local store.

The trails open Dec 1st and for the first time in 3 years, it looks like it might pan out..... Maybe not for everyone, but many locations.

Illinois trails don't open until Dec. 15. We were close to that last year but it was better just a tad north. My brother got a nice early season December backpack overnight trip in, messing around from say Beloit up to New Glarus to Madison and such.

Corn behind our sled storage is still up here locally, which is pretty late in the game. They usually pound out some good hunting weekends back there, but I can't see that as a reason to leave the entire field in.

Hmm,...not sure if this post belongs here but, the Toronto Maple leafs are facing the Capitals today at the ACC.

I love playing hockey, its my favorite sport so watching hockey games is just as fun, haha. Hard to play frequently, considering i have a packed university schedule. :(

Tonight's game should feature some flurries, puts many in that "hockey" spirit.

I love trying to play hockey on the backyard rink (roughly 35' x 80' this year) ... it's rough watching my 5 year old skate better than me though lol....it's not fair how close they are to the ice when they fall....I guess that's why they pick it up so quickly when they are that young

Yeah i started playing hockey when i was a kid too. Thats lovely, I recommend putting him on a local hockey team when he gets older if he enjoys playing it. Thats a decent backyard rink, perfect for your 5 year old, and the younger you are, the easier it is to pick up skills and new lessons faster than the older you are.  Your a great father figure, keep it up. :)

Skating isnt hard, but stopping and doing all those moves takes time to learn. I usually play road hockey/soccer in the summer and ice hockey in the Winter, haha.

Nice sized rink. Better than risking playing on a frozen pond. There is someone about a mile away that made a decent sized rink last winter, who has been working on one the last few days. Should last awhile.

I used to be good at ice skating, not so sure now.
