From Mike Ryan at IND...

"Our prelim count is now at 17 for the state. 12 from Indy CWA, 3 in NW Indiana and 2 in Grant County. This would be a new daily record for tornadoes in Indiana in November. The previous record was 14 on November 22, 1992. This would put us in 4th overall, behind only June 2, 1990 (33), May 30, 2004 (24), and April 3,1974 (20), all memorable days in their own right."

Survey teams will be going back out tomorrow, so those numbers are subject to change.

EDIT: Already changed. IWX just confirmed #18. An EF-1 in Pulaski County.

That brings the strong/violent tornado count with this outbreak to 17, and it may keep rising. Very impressive, especially for the Ohio Valley in November. The Gifford tornado was a beast of a wedge .

Tony, what's the process around the 'national' team that the link says will review to determine if the damage is greater than EF-4?

Is it SOP to have a certain group give a final EF-5 rating?

Does a regional or local survey team have the authority to rule EF-5?

It seems like the pattern with an EF-5 ruling has been to prelim rate @ EF-4, then upgrade to EF-5 in the following days.

Which is, I believe, the biggest (isn't it 44?).

I think it was 29 or 30 in IN...almost all were EF0/EF1 though.

The 7 prelim EF2+ tornadoes in Indiana currently ties for 4th place for most F/EF2+ in an outbreak and is the 2nd most F/EF2+ in a November outbreak (10, 11/22/1992).

I'm honestly not sure about the ability for local offices to rate a tornado EF5 (I think they're allowed to now).  As you can imagine, most are hesitant to do so without an outside expert opinion.  In this case, I'm guessing it's likely either Tim Marshall or Jim LaDue going up there to survey.

I'm not sure what this is gonna count as in terms of numbers but it's significant given November tornado climo in Michigan.

Not sure if anyone is keeping count of tornadoes that have been surveyed so far but the Wikipedia page for this event currently has 45.

This was a rather incredible November outbreak. Hoosier, props to you for being on top of this one, and also props to Tony who nailed this one just like he nailed October 4th. Also, I think Andy was the first one to point out this system which was another good call. It was a pleasure reading this board leading up to the event as usual.
