A TOUCH OF WINTER IN THE NORTHERN PIEDMONT...

DUAL POLE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED BANDS OF RAIN MIXED WITH SNOW WITH
POCKETS OF ALL SNOW CROSSING INTO PERSON COUNTY FROM CASWELL
COUNTY. ANOTHER BAND OF RAIN AND SNOW MIXED OR ALL SNOW EXTENDED
ACROSS THE NORTHERN SECTIONS OF GRANVILLE AND VANCE COUNTIES.
THESE BANDS OF PRECIPITATION WILL DRIFT SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE
NORTHERN PIEDMONT THROUGH THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AND INTO THE
EARLY EVENING HOURS. WHERE A QUICK BURST OF HEAVY WET SNOW
OCCURS...DO NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE SOME ACCUMULATION ON THE TOP
OF CARS OR VEGETATION. HOWEVER ONCE THE SNOW ENDS...MOST OF THE
SNOW WILL QUICKLY MELT DUE TO THE WARM SURFACE TEMPERATURES.

The SPC meso charts show just a warm bubble in the immediate lee of the Apps over the foothills of NC and upstate SC, and this is exactly the zone where the moisture is going to develop (already starting). The temps at 850 and 925 are cold enough in northern NC to soon be switching over from rain to snow, and this cold will bend in from the north, Greensboro first, then Raleigh, then down toward Salisbury and Charlotte to Fayetteville tonight. But further west, just downwind of the Apps, the Upstate of SC and southern Foothills of NC may just be too warm a thousand feet off the ground before the moisture finally leaves. (Spartanburg, Gaffney, Forest City, Shelby, Gastonia) This is normally how lee troughs work, and this is a classic case....look at the isobars. Its a race between cold enough air just above our heads versus the evaporational cooling effects. Always a tough call in the lee of the Apps. #vawx #ncwx #scwx #gvlwx #cltwx #rduwx
