uncle W
I can think of three off the bat...The December 26th 1947 26" storm...The city and ajoining burhs had the most snow from the storm...December 21-22, 1959...Central Park picked up 13.7" while other parts of the city averaged 8"...Ajoining burbs had less...February 26th 1991...the city picked up 6-10"...Highest amounts in the area...Please add any you can think of... Drz1111
There was a nor'easter in the mid or late 90s; IIRC NYC got 10" and most of the region was 6" or less. Sort of a mini 2006 situation where the city got caught under the pivot.

jm1220
2/25/10? Central Park had 22" from that one if not mistaken? How much did some of the burbs see? earthlight
If we are talking NYC area in general, 12/26 takes the cake. The amounts and the impacts in Northeast NJ suburbs were tops in my lifetime. From speaking to people around my area, it beat almost all of the big dog blizzards around here as well. ag3
Based on uncle's post it sounded like it was just NYC, specifically Manhattan/Central Park He specified that he meant NYC and it's 5 boroughs. Parts of LI and Queens were close to, if not over 30" as well. There was no widespread PNS and Internet spotter reports back then and I am sure that if there was, the Nesis map would look much more impressive. I don't know how you talk about greatest snowstorms in NYC without talking about the whole area in general. Because its fairly unique to have NYC be the bullseye, not the hills N&W of the city which usually do better or eastern LI. Everyone knows about 96 and its been talked about and will be talked about for decades. Its more interesting to find storms where NYC did better than everyone else on the eastern seaboard. I don't know how you talk about greatest snowstorms in NYC without talking about the whole area in general. it doesn't have to be a major storm...the city has to have the most...the December 1959 storm with nearly 14" doesn't even make Kocins b list...February 1991 wasn't a major storm but parts of Queens got 10" while Central Park got 9"...Surrounding areas got less... IsentropicLift
I think anyone would be very hard pressed to find reliable data from a snowstorm where one location saw at least 12" of snow and that report was within the city limits of NY. NJ or Long Island or even Weschester for that matter is almost always going to have higher totals.

It's not really big news if KNYC records 12" and KISP for example records 11". Now if KNYC had say 18" and everyone else was well under that amount, that would be noteworthy.
