Ian
Hmm, not bad. I guess I think in terms of flying from Dulles to Japan or China. LA is a good bit closer. Josh is big time. Gotta keep the FB fans happy. Plus if you can get to one of the strongest storms ever might as well, right? Even ERC probably only knocks it to a respectable Cat 5. Yeah, altho if they took a direct sustained hit at current or close intensity even reinforced concrete might not hold. I'm sure he'll be fine... crazy hobby though. I'd be losing it. Josh has done this for years and has always wanted a monster to chase. i understand his need to want to do this both as a weenie and for the scientific aspects. i just hope he can be safe given the location and intensity
RickinBaltimore
"Currently, the maximum sustained winds are estimated to be at 190 mph with gusts nearing 230 mph. Movement is to the west-northwest at 25 mph." 190 MPH? That is mind boggling.

Ian
Yea like tornado hunting is not crazy . Unless you're dumb enough to get really close there's a heck of a lot more control tornado chasing. You're probably at most risk from a car crash, lightning and hail out there.

I realize he's been doing this for a long time and it's his thing (and this is like chasing *the* one), but, to me, the decision to purposefully go into the path of a storm such as this in a place like the boonies of the Philippines simply isn't a rational one. Perhaps that's just me though.

He knew what he was doing and he still died, definitely a little crazy hobby as well.
mattie g
Looks like they've got a lot of cleaning up to do. I think we should just let it ride in that thread until it looks like this storm is actually possible. For now, it's still in the realm of weenie dreams and we're having fun with it.
