Yep. Hate seeing the leaves, dirt, rocks, etc... that my snowblower kicks up when I clear the driveway (a 300' gravel driveway). I agree with your sentiments. Beer tonight?

nah have not had many beers since Sept. On a diet, laying low for a while. Ski season incoming and plan on spending a lot of days on the slopes. Got fat this summer should be fine by Dec.

Lol, the day I discovered there were other folks just like me back in 1990 when I was on IRC it was such a relief. The absolute best part of weather boards. There is a commonality to all of us.

1990? That early?

Younger guys don't realize how isolated we weenies were before the internet.

First year of my second run at college as a full time undergrad at 33 years old. Mcidas when the Internet was colleges only. Only took one hour to download one Sat pic. The start of wunderground , Dupage etc. my first conversation I will never forget. Weenie named Don from Ithaca. I remember having a convo with Bob Copeland too. Then it exploded in 92. A long way from the difax machines in 78 watching the Sat of the biggest blizzard of my life come in in my Met class. Steve Cascione the long time Met in RI was in class with me the year before as a senior before he went to Accuweather. I spent more time in the early 90s learning the Internet for weather than for school work. In the lab I met the RI State climatologist and ended up interning with him and the USDA for URI, part of my work was ground truthing a new radar concept , Doppler

I remember the early 1970s calling Bob Copeland and Don Kent whenever they were around, they'd come to the phone and talk to me a long time!

Eclipse fail with the clouds, ftl.

Perhaps we'll get a glimpse of it out here--several patches of blue overhead and to my north.  Unfortunatley, thick overcast extending forever to the east.  Hopefully, the back edge of that area will quickly head east.  Not confident that that will happen.

Correct. Your wind speed went lighter in that stretch and you were more prone to variable turbulence. How high up is your anemometer?

Thanks.

It's really crappy!

It's only at 8' and I'm located at the top of a steep dropping hill  to the east (about 100' in a 1000', 150' in 1/4 mile with a rise back to my level in between).  No doubt the hill creates unusual swirling.  But, since the drop is just to the east of the siting, it's not too impacted with prevailing westerlies. Probably different in N/S vectors.

I told my wife that since she got a pool that I'm going to resite it.  I won't get to 10meters, but I hope I can get to 20' if I'm lucky.  I'll be trading the 'open location' from my Davis for a location that will have nearby trees.  I suspect the trade for height is a good thing to do.  Now, I just need to get my wireless anemoeter to do it.  And, then figure out how to connect that to my monitor.  So much to do, so little know how.

Why resite the entire Davis if you plan to get a wireless anemometer?

That's about the same period I was in Met school but I was 10 years younger, lol.  I volunteered at a local TV station before college where they had an old style wet DiFax machine from the 60s and I remember waiting for sfc and model maps.  They also had a weather teletype (I forget the name attm) where the hourly obs and other reports like the FOUS or FOUE would print.  McIdas changed all that making a lot of that information available on demand.  You're right about '92 being the magic year.  With the explosion of Internet and Web access in the next couple of years, access to weather information became much easier and the combination of that and my programming background led me to leave the business and become an IT guy.  I have a lot of nice memories of that time.  BTW, I have a satellite photo somewhere of Hurricane Gloria off the DiFax machine.
