Ughhhhh vacationed to Cranmore mountain that January...... 2 inches of rock hard snow..... And then the second ski day.... All out rain storm and bare patches showing up..... In the middle or winter no less.

They ended up getting a 12+ inch storm the day I left.... But my worst ski experience by far

The late 70s early 80s sucked by far for skiing.

Lol....I pulled out of Boston 11/14/76 not to return until 1991 (save for visits which were frequent in winter).

You missed the worst period ever on record for BOS...you just shoulda waited 2 years before moving out, lol.

'79-'92 was awful for BOS and most of the rest of SNE...pathetic snow totals. '81-'82 was good for BOS and thats about it...'87-'88 to a bit lesser extent. Interior also had '83-'84 and '86-'87, but man, the dead ratters were just awful and there were plenty of them to go around...like 7 or 8 of them within a 12 year period.

I can't remember the exact year, I think it was 81,  but I remember being up at Sugarloaf (ME) in February, and there was barely any snow anywhere, save for the 2 or 3 trails that had snowmaking at the time.

LOL, I was going through the Jan 12 2011 snow thread and forgot about Tip pulling the noose out on the storm. We all know what happened with that storm. Found this gem of a quote from me....."Tip got a correction vector right into his fanny, with this storm."

Lol, that thread and the other storm thread later in the month are classics. Was that the one Jerry totally melted down a couple of hrs before dumpage.

My first winter back was 1991-92....no prize. I was living up in Winchester and went to the local hardware store all weenied up in early November buying multiple shovels, one for the car, etc. The guy behind me in line (it was early November) says and I quote,,,"Do you know something I don't?"

Later that winter I was dating this woman in PWM and I went up to see her one Saturday afternoon with temp in the upper 40s. There was a boundary between Winchester and PWM and I drove though heavy snow...PWM ended up with 11 inches. The next day we went xc skiing in around Whitefield.

I met my wife in August of 1992 and the rest is history...and whilst we have had some spectacular ratters (1994-95, 2000-01, 2006-07, 2011-12) we also had the greatest 2 winters in Boston history in a period of 3 years.

Winters coming!

True dat..  Though things like aspen and pine only go through the stove when they fall in my dooryard or right next to the road to the house.  The pitchier or wetter the wood, the more open the vent and flue should be, to encourage hot fires.  I draw the line at wet balsam poplar, however, recalling a line from an Allagash logger while discussing which wood to burn green, "You couldn't afford the oil it would take to burn Balm o' Gilead!"

I've used wood as the primary heat source (various oil burner backups) since buying our first house in 1977, anywhere from 4 to 6 cords, the larger in our back-settlement Ft.Kent place 1981-85.  All but 4 of those years (that 81-85 period), we had Jotul stoves, and due to their well-engineered front vent, I either don't have a damper (on the 602 and 118 box stoves) or don't use it (my current combi-fire, on which I never use the open-door "combi" option.)

We use wood for our primary heating as well with oil backup and go through about 6 cords/year.  Coincidentally, we have Jotul stoves as well.  We got our first one when we lived on the Mid-Coast.  We we moved to GC 5 years ago, we ended up getting two for here.  The F3CB--fairly compact with good heating.

Lol...1991-1992 was a bit of a letdown to come back to. We actually had a white christmas season in Dec 1991 out west of BOS, but the rest of the winter stunk until we had some big cold in March. I think we had one decent storm in early February that year.

You were rewarded 3 ofthe next 4 years with '92-'93, '93-'94, and '95-'96.

Damn it! Get some snow in here to cool things. It has started to flake. 29.6 here. But BOS has me spooked as visions of 12/30/00 are dancing in my head...

If this pulls a 12/30/00 I'm moving to Florida.
Temps going up....29.9. I have to sleep. This just isn't worth it.
30.1 CF heading to Ray. You're rain????
UH OH! BOS UP TO 35! F U C K!!!
A Miller B tucked in too close. You went to a Celtics game and knew were cooked as soon as you looked up.....as did I as soon as I stepped outdoors after a 10F rise in temps. ONLY 5F this time but not imby thankfully.

Steady light snow. Going to sleep worried.....
Jesus...30.2 Rocketing..
Good luck. I'm worried and you should be too.

We (on the coast) are so screwed. Oh well...should have known..
30.7. This is amazingly fast. Should be above freezing in 15 minutes I'd say. I may not make it that long to observe.
I'm ok if I don't change. I have the bile of 12/30/00 in my belly.
Can you imagine the outrage of canceling everything for 3 inches of slop?
I am over reacting but I didn't expect things to unravel this quickly. And there are signs it's not transient. This low may come up our fannies
Spoke too soon. 31.9
Yeah this has touched my deepest meteorological traumas. 12/30/00 is right up there.
Wrong side of the CF for now. Light snow but at least snow. Going to bed.
Deep breathing....DOWN to 31.8......calm...calm....
31.7. Bleeding has slowed...drifting back down. I'm drifting into dreamland as I've been threatening to do for the past 2 hours.
31.6. Now that it's dropping it's fascinating vs fear inducing.
31.5. I like this ride better.
31.4. Alert over. Will wake up to ripping conds.

I feel you there. I think that sets the standard going forward for worst case scenario

Might have to agree, though 05-06 (my least snowy winter) and 09-10 are competitive.  I measured 68" in 11-12, which is only 5th worst of 15 winters here (oddly, it just tops 02-03, which had 67.8" but also 146 days with 1" or more OG, most of any winter, as was its 12 days with lows -20 or colder.)  2011-12 tied 1999-00 (with its snowless Dec) for least days with snowcover, 86, thanks to frequent thaws plus the March heat wave.

For the early 1980s, it depends on where one lived.  Farmington in 1979-80 had its least snowy winter since records began in 1893, only to have 80-81 come in with an inch less.  Those remain the bottom pair.  In Ft. Kent, 79-80 was easily the worst, but then things improved.  1981-82 had 185.8" capped by the April blizzard, and 1983-84 totaled 171.0" with 5,715 SDDs and peak depth of 65", these latter two figures by far the most I've recorded anywhere.

Oh-oh, I noticed a reference to the drought in the (serious) discussion thread.

Last drought I almost drowned.

this one is much more impressive.   My area's had about 6 inches of rain going back to 6/20 or so. (meanwhile we had 6 inches in 3 days earlier in June)  On track for 5th driest year ever.

Random question, I figured I'd ask this board since it has a lot of mets. here.

Has there been any model research where meteorologists have taken old observations, plugged them into the newer models, and saw what they would have forecasted compared to what was forecasted?

To better explain my question;

January 25, 2000 snowstorm (one of my favorite snow memories), though I'm not positive, I believe the ETA & MRF didn't have the storm coming up the coast up to 24 hours before the event. Has there ever been anything done where the old observed data from lets say January 22nd, 2000 was plugged into the new, updated models, to see if they would of accurately predicted the storm? I guess the other problem area would be that we probably have a better ability to gather current obs compared to 13 years ago.
