Holy crap, BTV set a record low. I like how the NWS terms it a "rarity" these days. It certainly is!

"We broke some low temperature records this morning in a few spots...a rarity these days! Burlington fell to 20 F, Montpelier 14 F, and Massena, NY 18 F, all records. With strong high pressure remaining overhead tonight, chilly temperatures are once again expected. Lows mainly 12-22 F, though locally milder near the Lake Champlain shore, and colder in favored northern mountain hollows. See accompanying map for forecast low temperatures in your general area."

didn't Montpelier set one last week? Aren't temp records supposed to be rarities?

lol maybe but they aren't if you are looking for warm records...days, weeks, monthly, annually. We set new ones all the time for warmth Ginxy, you know that. We have to cherish the cold ones :)

First three weeks in October were the warmest ever with almost a +8 departure over 21 days at BTV. Don't have to look hard to find warm records there.

Wasn't it snowman that posted a while back the number of daily warm records at New England sites were out-pacing the daily cold records by like 4 to 1 in the past x-number of years?

just asking here, how many daily high records did Montpelier set in October? Two lows in a week is a good sign.

I'm not sure in October..might have had a record high minimum or something associated with the record warmth for three weeks, but I don't see any record highs...I know they set three warm records in September though.

I'm not sure why we seem to always go back and forth on this, haha. You can't deny the fact that warm records are far out-pacing cold records. It's not an interpretation. I wish it wasn't true, but we aren't pumping out cold records. BTV said it was a rarity, not me, but I agree with that assessment.

Luckily like you said, it's a good sign to have two in a week. I honestly wish we knew when the last time that happened, lol.

I'm not complaining.  Down to 29° here, 24° over in Union.  Yikes!  That site radiates like a mofo at first, then slows down.

That's your station in Union, right?  That's the one I was referring to--though I managed to post the wrong map!

So much for my hope for a precipitous temp drop after sunset.

29.9/13

We blitzed out quite a few cold records in the early 2000s...but its not like they were dominating the heat records. Any long term station will have trouble breaking cold records from the early 20th century or even some of the epic cold shots in the 1970s.

We've been very warm the past 6 years though relatively speaking versus the rest of the CONUS, making it even tougher than usual to break older cold records. The only real cold period was parts of 2009. We did experience a record cold 60 day period that summer. BOS tied their coldest June on record.

Yeah, good points. I'm definitely going to be biased as I've lived here for those 6 very warm years, and I'd wager the warm records may even out-number the cold records like 6:1 if you include record high minimums and monthly temperature records. I don't like it as a snow lover and used to deflect it when people talked about the warm records, but the trend has been really hard to ignore for me lately. I'm not trying to be like LL and praise warmth and sun...just trying to talk about it as it's hard to ignore the background warmth of the past decade.

I see BTV's last back to back cold months were in 2009...it was -1.4 in June 2009 and -2.4 in July 2009, before August rebounded to +1.6. That -2.4 to me is really impressive knowing the stats of the last 6 years, must've been a chilly summer month.

Also, your point on the longer term climate sites having trouble breaking cold records from like 100 years ago in early 20th century is a good point. Montpelier seems to break more cold records, but they have a shorter record period (starting in the 1950s I think), vs BTV's records to 1882. BTV had like an extra 70 years to set cold records.

Yeah that's awesomely impressive for that Union station. How far is it from the center of town (like the church and crossroads)?

It's about a mile as the crow flies.  Its in a col about 50' below the top of the hill in an opening in one of my sugar bushes.  Here's a map showing approximately where.  You can see it's about a mile or so from the center of town.  I think the combination of elevation and low spot helps settle colder air but it slows down after a while.  I'm often colder by morning because I tend to steadily drop all night.

Yeah, that's my other station.  Like I've mentioned it's so I can monitor temps in one of my sugar bushes but it's more for amusement at times.

Still currently 29/19 here and 24/15 in Union.

I also enjoy checking the temps in Union, since they're often much cooler than here, and it seems like 7 people live in that town.

Hopefully one of these days we can get a weather watcher in Union for snow...

I'll be damned... did not think they would bother, but looks like they hit Indian Summer, Ralphs, Smith, Challenger, Ollie's

It will melt away Thursday

I should have looked as I went by on Rte 2. Now that the leaves are down I can see it

We'll it looks like they're making it again tonight and yes, I bet a lot melted away today. Maybe they're just testing equipment more than anything

NNE thread is the best. Never a mention of a bad or torch pattern coming up. Just always high/low and pics of mtns. It's like they close their eyes during torches and wake up when the pattern changes.

They have the latitude and altitude for that luxury

Hell, a torch up there in winter is a day in the 20's

Yeah we keep that thread pretty objective, then come into the other threads for the subjective stuff, lol. It's almost like just an observation thread with a couple posts per day.
