Land O'Lakes' point has no high temp forecast above 40F in the next seven days.  A couple chances of light/moderate snow as well.  Would be pretty typical of what we experience around the New Year.

Our average high around the new year is 31F, I would be furious if it was 40F.

100% chance of snow already tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night...

APX expecting a handful of counties to be issued WWA's.

ACCUMULATING SNOW IS EXPECTED IN THE TRADITIONAL SNOWBELTS OF

EASTERN UPPER AND NORTHWEST LOWER MICHIGAN LATER THURSDAY

AFTERNOON AND THURSDAY NIGHT. SNOW COVERED ROADS AND BRIEF PERIODS

OF LIMITED VISIBILITY WILL OCCUR WITHIN THE HEAVIER SNOW SHOWERS.

CERTAINLY DO NOT FORESEE A WARNING EVENT...BUT A HANDFUL OF

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES MAY BE IN THE CARDS TOMORROW NIGHT AND

WILL ADD THIS TO THE HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK.

Many recent New Year's periods have torched, but you're right, averages are around freezing for many of us.  Their average for the 7 day period was around 35F though, and may end up being colder if they can keep any snow cover.

You know as a sledder how ****ty the week before new yrs has tended to be for us in the tropics.

2000..  we all know how great that month was. 49.5" and cold..   Then we turned in to st louis for the rest of the winter.

2001.. cold end to december but only 2.6" of snow for the month.  I cringe every time i hear weatherfella pimp a 2001-2002 analog for this winter.

2002.. inferno on the 30th and hardly any dec snow again.

2003.. inferno with hardly any snow in dec.

2004.. no snow in dec and an inferno to end the month

2005.. mild no snow.

2006.. inferno.

2007.. was warm before Christmas to kill the snow pack.  Record high temp of 63 Jan 7th.

2008.. the trails down here were UP smooth and deep..  Dec 26th and 27th took it all away.

2009.. was ok..  lacked deep snow though and 42 on christmas day didn't help. Jan was meh for snow.  one storm then nothing.

2010.. was an inferno to close out the yr.   Jan was nice temps wise but it was a detroit nickle and dime month.

2011.. another inferno.

2012.. was ok but lacked snow and was an inferno month.

2011 and 2012 were AWFUL, no doubt... But the recent decade overall was generally normal... The 1990's were AWFUL, the 2000's were a major improvement. Let's see how things go from here.

If WisWx wants to use 11 and 12 as "recent", he's right, if he means within the last 10-15 years, he's wrong

I'm using 100 year averages too...

Might have to start putting up some of the Christmas lights on the higher up spots (everygreen tops and second floor gutters) this weekend.  Obviously not turning them on yet...but I like to get them started before things get too cold and icey....winteriness seems possible next week...hasn't been much of an issue the last few years

I was thinking the same thing. I put icicle lights up along the roofline, and that involves getting on the roof. It gets quite cold up there, even with a modest breeze. I'll probably start wrapping the trees trunks with lights after I get most of the leaves picked up. Still waiting for the silver and sugar maples to shed their leaves completely.

I'm starting to get excited for winter and snow for my neck of the woods. Our average for mid michigan for the first 1" of snow is around Nov. 15th. We don't have all the leaves raked up yet and we're waiting for the last of our neighbors tree to fall lol. At least the first snow of the year and signs of the coming winter is looking promising. 36.6° right now.
