Yeah, seems like it was an awesome winter. Unfortunately for me 96-97 is one winter before my "snow memory" begins. I was 10 at the time and don't have the faintest recollection of any of the snowstorms.

That's about the first winter I can really remember that well...or at least when I really starting paying attention to how much fell. I was about 14 then.

Almost 70" in Toronto, 60-70" in Chicago, but nothing special (which sounds like in the 40s to me) in Detroit. That's an awful screwhole. Unless Geos' 60-70" figure is up on his mountain instead of at ORD.

I know there was at least 55-60" of snow around here that winter. If I remember right there was a localized LES event and I had school canceled for a day because of it. It was almost a complete surprise to the district. There was frequent events that winter.

Anyways, the last day of the month is wrapped up to be above normal. Something that has been in short supply this month. High 48°, a total torch.

7 years ago tonight we were getting ready for a last minute surprise NW tick that bumped our snow totals from what looked like just a few inches to 11" here.  There was a tremendous cutoff to the snow on the northwest edge.  Just northwest of the QC they literally didn't get a flake.  It seemed to take forever for the snow to back in here, as it was fighting very dry air, but once it moved in it was like a wall of heavy snow.  Went from a quiet evening with little wind, to very heavy snow and strong northeast winds.  It was odd how the winds picked up as soon as the precip moved in.  One of my all-time favorite events.

This was one of the most intense winter storms around here.  It only lasted for 6-10 hours, but the rates were easily 1-2" per hour to get the metro into a foot of snow.

I absolutely HATED that 2006 storm.  It bugged me much more than GHD.  Things were looking very good for my area a few days out when a NAM run came in (I think it was probably the 12z run on 11/28) with a farther west track and sort of a double barrel low structure...with warm air/ptype problems.  At that range, it was easy to chalk it up to the NAM being the NAM but lo and behold, that is pretty much how it played out.  I did end up chasing in northeast IL but that whole thing left a bitter taste in my mouth lol

November finished 37.5F at DTW, which is 4.0F below normal. The largest departure since December 2010 was also -4.0F. Havent a bigger negative departure since July 2009 with -4.6F. Really smacked down the annual November torch calls we saw at the beginning of the month  (Actually this was the 2nd colder than normal Nov in a row).

Nov precip at DTW was 1.82" which is nearly an inch below normal however the year as a whole is about to jump into top 20 wettest territory with the first storm of December, whenever that is. Snowfall of 1.2" was actually only 0.3" below normal (the new norms account for the lower Nov snowfall averages). IMBY I had 2.10" precip and 1.1" snow in Nov.

MET Fall for DTW came in -1.1F, with a mean temp of 51.6F, and total precip of 6.50" was 2.08" below normal (but we already were well on our way to a wetter than nomal year). MET Fall precip imby was 7.24".

At YYZ, November 2013 will be the coldest since 1996. Incidentally, that following winter (1996-97) saw nearly 70" of snow.

I remember that winter quite well as I was in Grade 11. December was largely mild that year until a cold front came through on - of all days - Christmas Eve. We were driving between Toronto and Kitchener, Ontario when the front crossed and drove through one of the biggest snowsqualls I've ever experienced. Kitchener must have received a foot out of that lake effect event. It was totally amazing and unexpected, a classic, picture postcard Christmas Eve. It snowed through the night and was still snowing on Christmas morning!

Finished the month at -5.7F (there's some missing data including the torch day of the 17th so the actual departure isn't quite that low).  Don't expect to see much snow in November but it would've been nice to get more given that temp departure.  Cold kinda went to waste imby.
