Few November odds and ends for here.

~Today should be our 6th day with a max temp AOB 32F.. It would be the 6th out of the last 7 days where we dont eclipse freezing. The average for November is 1 day. For comparisons sake...the date of our 6th subfreezing max temp the last 5 winters:

2013-14: Nov 29th?

2012-13: Jan 1st

2011-12: Jan 13th

2010-11: Dec 9th

2009-10: Dec 19th

~Today is the 5th day this month with a T of snowcover on the ground at 8am obs time, but no days have had 1"+.

~Today is our 5th day this month with lows in the teens.

~Temperature departure for November will finish better than 4F colder than normal at DTW. Some torch that some called for this month, huh laugh.png. This will be the largest monthly negative temp departure since July 2009.

~Mt Brighton, a SE MI ski staple since 1960, opened a full MONTH earlier than normal this year. They have a base of 22" but their grand opening is scheduled for Dec 14th.

The month as a whole is like a watered down version of Nov 1976, which led to the historically brutal cold winter of 1976-77.

has snowed most of the day.... only 2" of accumulation however but nice nonetheless.

over a foot on the ground here, and in Central Lake and Bellaire too.  Areas near the shore have done well lately.

Gaylord has hit 30" for the season so far!

what's your total for today and depth Blackrock?

8 inches for both. It tapered off for a while in the morning and settled some. We had two inches on the ground before from earlier in the week. Then it started up again around noon. It sure is beautiful!

Snowfreek your hard data is what my mind has been thinking the last few days.... Nov has had some cold spells but skatable pond ice and lows to this magnitude is a rarity.

Let's hope for a strong snowy period after the next quick torch. Remember a few weeks ago having tornado's followed by snow.... It more than likely will happen again but with a much cooler storm and without the severity of weather. Sooner or later the cold will win the battle over the gulf warmth and a biggen will be forming over us all.

Today is gorgeous out!!

Killer late Fall day here. Sun was shining and the chill was manageable. Days like today really help combat the early cabin fever.

Brought the wheel loader outside to do some last minute wiring in the full sun. Lasted about 30 minutes before some clouds rolled in and made me hunker down back inside the warm shop. I prefer working in natural light in confined spaces, makes the job much easer and helps my vitamin D intake.

I estimate this November to end up as the 23rd coldest on record for Detroit. Despite that, just 1.2" of snow fell. Unheard of? Actually...no. When I looked up the top 20 coldest Novembers on record, 8 of them had snowfall well below 3".

#2- 1976 (33.5F) – 1.4”

#7- 1967 (35.2F) – 1.4”

#8- 1936 (35.4F) – 2.0”

#9- 1995 (35.5F) – 1.3”

#12-1910 (35.7F) – 2.3”

#14-1903 (36.4F) – 2.3”

#14-1901 (36.4F) – T

#19-1929 (36.9F) – 1.4”

#23-2013 (37.3F) – 1.2”

At YYZ, November 2013 will be the coldest since 1996. Incidentally, that following winter (1996-97) saw nearly 70" of snow.

Yeah that was quite a winter here too. Not sure of the exact total, but it was between 60-70" around here.

30° this morning felt downright balmy, compared to walking outside in the teens lately!

Its amazing, didnt expect this at all. It's been quite a cold November here. We also saw some really cool anomalies back in September, that hasnt been seen in Toronto in a while.

Btw, both November 2007 and 2008 were cold Novembers in Toronto ;). On the other hand, 2009, 2010 and 2011 were far warmer.

We have been on a crazy run of scant snow in Novembers and epic snow in February, and so far, it continues. Its crazy how November snowfall is so meager lately, and to boot winters are usually snowier than normal since 2000. This will be my 19th winter measuring snowfall...look at my November snowfall and then seasonal snowfall:

Season......Nov.....Total

1995-96 -- 2.9" -- 31.3"

1996-97 -- 5.7" -- 35.9"

1997-98 -- 6.0" -- 27.2"

1998-99 ---- T --- 52.1"

1999-00 ---- T --- 29.3"

2000-01 -- 2.2" -- 47.3"

2001-02 ---- 0 --- 42.5"

2002-03 -- 3.5" -- 66.9"

2003-04 -- 0.7" -- 36.6"

2004-05 -- 0.7" -- 80.7"

2005-06 -- 4.8" -- 41.9"

2006-07 -- 0.3" -- 36.3"

2007-08 -- 0.7" -- 78.2"

2008-09 -- 1.9" -- 64.8"

2009-10 ---- T --- 46.1"

2010-11 ---- T --- 69.4"

2011-12 -- 0.6" -- 25.5"

2012-13 -- 0.4" -- 47.9"

2013-14 -- 1.1" -- ????

So....in 19 years, my avg November snowfall is 1.7" and average seasonal (18 yrs) is 47.8". HOWEVER....if you chop off the first 3 winters (1995-96 thru 1997-98), then my average November snowfall in the last 16 years is 1.0", while average seasonal (15 yrs) is 51.0"!!! This is quite an interesting quirk that is happening to our snowfall climate here.

At Detroit, in 1999 I had figured out the 120-year average was 2.9" of November snowfall and 40.0" on the season. Though I have not yet calculated the updated 130-year snowfall, I can tell you that Nov has DEFINITELY decreased and seasonal DEFINITELY increased. The  latest NCDC 1981-2010 norms for Detroit are 1.4" in Nov and 42.7" on the season (NOWData has 1.5" Nov, 44.1" season).

And with last November being slightly colder than normal and this November much colder than normal (will rank between #23-25 coldest on record, pending todays temps), you can't just chalk it up to the string of milder Novembers weve been seeing. Its an odd quirk for sure, and a bit frustrating for antsy snowlovers like myself at the beginning of a season, but as long as the outcomes of snowier winters continue, Id rather see that than November snowfall increasing but seasonal decreasing.

Even when you get a relatively snowy November, it never really contributes to the continuity of snowcover or the overall snowdepth. There's always a warm period to wash it away. So for a snowcover/snowdepth lover like yourself, it's obvious to make the tradeoff of less snow in November for more in February.

Yeah, seems like it was an awesome winter. Unfortunately for me 96-97 is one winter before my "snow memory" begins. I was 10 at the time and don't have the faintest recollection of any of the snowstorms.

1996-97 wasnt anything special here. A snowy November and a snowy January were winters main highlights. No big storms (biggest 4.5"). Was much better north of Detroit.

Almost 70" in Toronto, 60-70" in Chicago, but nothing special (which sounds like in the 40s to me) in Detroit. That's an awful screwhole. Unless Geos' 60-70" figure is up on his mountain instead of at ORD.

1996-97 was the one and only winter since 1880 that Detroits official snowfall data is missing. That was I think when they were having problems with the faa and a lot of airports across the country have missing data for that winter. I do know that White Lake had better than 55" that winter, and my total of 35.9" may be a bit low (my 2nd winter measuring snow, and I had no idea what was going on elsewhere either so a few storms may have screwed me) so when looking at surrounding data, I have estimated that winter to be right around 40" for DTW. Also...ORD had 40.6", nowhere near 60+.

http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/?n=chi_seasonal_snow

The worst screwhole actually was the winter before, 1995-96. ORD had 23.9" and DTW 27.6" while the upper midwest, OV, and east coast were slammed. Some awfully mangy winters in the '90s, but climo has more than made up for them with the snowfall express here this century.

C Wisconsin, on the other hand, was an absolute jackpot, thanks largely to a two part huge March snowstorm that dropped 24-30" in some spots.  Here's the season's snowmap in Wisconsin:

FWIW, I think Geos' figure is up on his mountain, because it doesn't jive with this map.
