M7.1 shakes Tohoku coast, tsunami advisory issuedKYODO An earthquake registering a preliminary magnitude 7.1 struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture early Saturday morning, and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued an advisory for tsunami of up to 1 meter for the prefecture. The focus of the 2:10 a.m. quake was in the Pacific roughly 10 km underground around 290 km east-southeast of Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture, north of Fukushima. The quake registered a moderate intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Fukushima, Miyagi, Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures. JMA urged people in Fukushima area to stay away from the coast.
