Eskimo Joe
Two questions. Where do you get notifications for new AWOS sites and how are the identifiers generated (i.e.: random computer assignment, human, etc.)
vortex95
Two questions. Where do you get notifications for new AWOS sites and how are the identifiers generated (i.e.: random computer assignment, human, etc.) There are no official notices that I know of when AWOS sites get added to NADIN comms so their METARs can be transmitted to NCEP and then over NOAAPort for all to see. I use a customized program that checks all current valid METARs site codes with the regular text data feeds and it flags any METAR site code not currently in the list. I then go here: http://www.aviationweather.gov/adds/metars/ to confirm they are being sent. If METARs show up on this site, then they are publicly available over the conventional NCEP data feeds. Site codes at airports are assigned by the FAA. They can be looked up here: http://www.airnav.com/airports/
