Superstorm93
Looks like they will be in the northern eyewall. Best of luck to them with this 195 mph monster
weatherMA
Most surreal thing is seeing twitter accounts of people completely clueless of what is about to unfold in the area....and seeing people from all around the world attempting to explain what is about to happen. ncforecaster89
Isn't it true that one could assume the forward speed of the storm can be added (to the northern eyewall in this case) to the sustained winds? Actually, the translational speed is already taken into consideration when determining the 1-minute maximum sustained wind speed. It's not like adding a 20 mph forward speed to a 195 mph MSW to get a MSW of 215 mph. In this case, it's highly likely that the MSW of 195 mph is located in the NE quad. tornadotony
Josh is in just about the meteorologically worst spot he can be in (best for chasing but...).
apm
Yes,they're certainly in the eye wall, to clarify, we were discussing whether they would be inside the eyewall, i.e., in the clearing of the eye. They will be in the eyewall, they don't have to be in the middle of the eyewall to be considered in it.
tornadotony
Gotta wonder if the nrn eyewall having passed over a little bit of land may affect how things play out for Josh. It's certainly not going to weaken it by any significant margin, but you have to wonder if that little bit of increased friction is going to weaken the sustained winds ever so slightly but increase the downward turbulent flux of even higher momentum air and increase gust intensity. eyewall
Tanauan is where you need to be for stadium effect shots. Looks like Josh may barely clip the northeastern portion of the eye, but overall he is just going to take a beating.
wxeyeNH
Wow, just wow. In the northern eyewall of a rapidly moving Cat 5+ storm. Probably some of the strongest winds a hurricane chaser has ever experienced. Reminds me of the Charlie video of that gas station being shredded. It almost looks like he could just very briefly break out into the eye. We probably will not hear from him for sometime, that city is going to have horrific damage. Hazey
This will likely cause unprecedented damage from a TC. I fear the death toll may be substantial. Prayers for all those in harms way.
Drz1111
With 50k people in Tanauan, and the spread of digital cameras on cell phones, I suspect there's a good chance someone will get the holy grail picture, though it won't look as good as if one of the pros snapped it. Tanauan is where you need to be for stadium effect shots. Looks like Josh may barely clip the northeastern portion of the eye, but overall he is just going to take a beating. Maybe just maybe someone would get some eye shot pictures, Tanauan seems fairly sizable.

Scott747
Typhoon “YOLANDA” has made second landfall over Dulag-Tolosa Leyte with maximum sustained winds of 235 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 275 kph.
ncforecaster89
Hopefully, the interaction with land, before it got to them, will have slightly mitigated the extreme effects they are experiencing...Although, they are no doubt getting hammered, to say the least! Amped
The fairly populated Tacloban city, to Tanuan area are getting the full brunt of it..There is a 3500 ft ridge it has to cross, but not until it gets to the other side of Leyte. After it crosses the ridge the next populated area it will get is the north coast of Panay. Just for reference.

That would put it around 146 mph sustained at landfall by their account.
tornadotony
Is all communication with Josh down?? Thinking they may have been spared the most extreme effects. As much I would love to have that feeling at this point, it's 100% unwarranted. They're currently in what should be the most intense part of the eyewall per radar. tornadotony
That would put it around 146 mph sustained at landfall by their account. Yeah I doubt that. It certainly doesn't seem supported by the radar presentation, nor the satellite.
eyewall
Quite a reduction from the current estimate. PAGASA has had it much lower than JTWC through the whole thing so far I think.
