Hikers enjoy a beautiful day at Rough Ridge along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Rough Ridge parking area can be found at Milepost 302.8 and the summit has an elevation just below 4,800 feet. (Photo by Skip Sickler)

Maples overlooking the Scottish Highland Games Field on Grandfather Mountain MacRae Meadows.   This pop of color is one of the prettiest on the Mountain right now. It can be found just above MacRae Meadows, along the Grandfather Mountain Summit Access Road. (Photo by Landis Taylor)

The Tanawha Trail runs 13.5 miles from Julian Price Park to Beacon Heights and parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the region.

The light of this Tuesday morning 08OCT13 sunrise amplified the spectacular autumn colors that can be found along the trail near Rough Ridge. (Photo by Skip Sickler)

This week and weekend will be a great time to enjoy fall color in the N.C. High Country. Autumn hues are reaching peak above 4,000 feet. Maples, sourwoods, ash, yellow birch, witch hazel and oaks are all beautiful at Grandfather Mountain right now.

These beautiful maples lining the picket fence at the intersection of NC Hwy 181 and US Hwy 221 in Pineola set the scene for beautiful photographs each fall. This image is a great illustration of the current color between 3,000 and 4,000 feet in elevation (including the towns of Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk) - bright autumn colors and many leaves that are still yet to turn. Morning sunlight helps this private driveway just off the Linville Bypass come alive with color. This weekend will be a great time to enjoy fall color in the N.C. High Country. (Photo by Skip Sickler)

The Blue Ridge Parkway from Linville to Blowing Rock is a gorgeous drive right now as well as NC Hwy 105 from Seven Devils to Linville. Autumn hues are at peak above 4,000 feet.

Here is a detailed set of observations of fall color on and around Grandfather Mountain, from Jesse Pope, Chief Naturalist at the Park.

"Things are still looking pretty good up here. The color at the top of the mountain above about 4700ft has begun to dull a bit but the color has really ramped up down to 3,000ft along the mountain ridges. I'm seeing color well below the parkway almost to Edgemont today! I would say at 2800ft the color is around 40-50% at this point. We still have some green at 4,000 feet so I don't think we are at peak here yet but its coming. The Yellow Birch, Red Oaks, Black Gum, Sourwood, Hop Hornbeam and others are changing at 4,000ft.

I believe the color is right on track. I disagree with some of the publicity that is out saying the color is delayed. I just don't see that happening here.

By next weekend the leaves will be off the trees above 5,000ft. which is typical for the 3rd weekend in October.

We have had years where the color extends into November on Grandfather, the last year I have a record of that was 2004. I don't believe that is going to happen this year though. In my opinion based on what I see here the color is right on track. It has progressed dramatically this week in the Linville River Valley between Linville and Tynecastle and into Banner Elk. Tynecastle is now past peak and the same is true for the top of Beach and Sugar. The lower levels of Sugar will be really nice for Octoberfest this weekend though. Hope this is helpful.

Fall color is bright and beautiful on the flanks of Grandfather right now. This image was taken from US 221 looking up at the Linn Cove Viaduct. (Photo by Skip Sickler)

Autumn hues are at peak above 4,000 feet. This is an eventful weekend in the High Country with Appalachian State University's Homecoming, the Boone Heritage Festival on Saturday and Sugar Mountain's Oktoberfest on Saturday and Sunday.

It's a cloudy morning in the N.C. High Country with some drizzle. The color is absolutely beautiful right now at Little Lost Cove Cliffs (accessed from the Old Jonas Ridge Road). (Photo by Skip Sickler)

Autumn tones pop nicely against an overcast and foggy backdrop. The color should develop nicely this week on the mountain flanks (3,000 - 4,000 feet in elevation) and along some of the major routes in the area like NC Hwy 105 and US 221.

The view from the top of Grandfather Mountain is gorgeous this morning with low-lying clouds to our east and south. The surrounding landscape has really come alive with color this week as illustrated in this photo looking toward Grandmother Mountain. (Photo by Landis Taylor)

Fall color really seemed to pop yesterday evening after the overcast weather moved out of the area. This week and the coming weekend should be beautiful in the NC High Country. Colorful routes right now are Hwy 105 from Boone to Linville, Hwy 181 from Linville to Newland and Hwy 321 from Boone to Blowing Rock.

Wednesday 16OCT13

The sun rises on another beautiful day in the NC High Country as some of the first light shines on the Linn Cove Viaduct.  This engineering marvel winds its way around Grandfather Mountain at Milepost 304 of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  (Photo by Skip Sickler)

The Grandfather Mountain attraction and Grandfather Mountain State Park  are not affected by the national government shutdown and remain open to visitors.  While facilities along the Blue Ridge Parkway are closed, the road remains open and is a great place to see fall color.

Color season is about over for elevations about 6000 feet. Just about all the leaves have fallen and the only color is from the mountain ash berries and of course looking down towards the lower elevations.

Pic from this weekend at my place looking down towards Maggie Valley.
