ORH_wxman
January 2004 is the coldest month on record at BOS at Logan Airport...you have to go back to January 1888 to get a month colder at BOS than January 2004 and that was when the site was more inland versus out in the middle of Boston Harbor, and even then it only beat 2004 by 0.5F. Its likely that it would not have been able to beat it if the site was in the same place as 2004. One of the most impressive months for Boston cold you'll see. I remeber frozen brakes and arctic smoke on Boston Harbor. What year was that? Probably 1981 or 1982...both were very cold Januarys. January 1985 was quite cold too, though not as cold as the previous 2 listed. January 1981 was pretty sneaky in how cold it was...only 0.8F warmer than January 2004. The winter gets largly forgotten though because it was so devoid of snow.
ORH_wxman
Was Dec 1989 almost as cold? Or Jan 1990? Decmeber 1989 amazingly was almost as cold despite it being a much warmer month climatologically. December 1989 is definitely more anomalous, but January 2004 was the coldest raw average temperature. The anomaly was greater in Dec 1989 (about a -13 for BOS)

ORH_wxman
i got 7" from a ~.25" L.E. clipper in jan 04 I think we had about 1.5-2" from that and the snow was falling at like 2F. I think there were a few jackpots down in NJ that were around 9-10" with not even 0.3" of qpf.
moneypitmike
Managed about the same low last night as the progged colder one the night before. (39.3 so far vs. 38.9). I wonder if I'll get out of the 50's today. Topped at 57.4 yesterday. Like Chris, I was tempted to light the fire. Got lazy and turned on the heat instead. Local stations in CT range from totally dry to soaking rain this afternoon thru Friday with showers lingering into Sat There may be some shwrs over nrn CT like I said for Saturday, but I don't think it's a washout at all. Tomorrow will likely be wet, but still...not an easy forecast with the high to the north.

snowman21
Sometimes meteorology is treated as a joke. Bothersome. Certainly doesn't help when you have a certain CT weatherman eating cat vomit during the morning show.

CoastalWx
I was down on the Cape and the canal looked like a steam bath when it first got cold in 2004. Then icebergs were floating down a week later.

snowman21
You did not thing jan 04 was impressive? I doubt we "our area" could get any colder then that. It was impressive. I just said that Jan '09 had more extreme lows, but I think clocked in a few tenths or maybe a degree warmer than '04. Jan '09 had lows that were the coldest since 1994. Getting -10 right down to the water is pretty tough to do - pretty much a once in 20 year (perhaps longer) occurrence.

ORH_wxman
The Euro ensembles delay the cold a day or two versus the last couple days. This is not surprising since they often like to rush pattern changes in initially. This is the type of pattern that gets the N plains and N Rockies cold...and then it finally gets to us. Certainly could see a cutter before that happens...in fact, the OP has one and the ensembles sort of support the idea around 10/18-19....longs ways out still though.
