October 2013 General Discussion

Was just looking through the Oct weather station data.  Definitely been an interesting month.  Started the month quite warm, with a high of 84 on the 2nd.  The high of 36 yesterday was nearly 50 degrees colder.  Also, 6 weeks ago yesterday to the day it hit 97 here.  Been a very interesting fall.

Weather station shows 0.09" for today, as some residual snow melted off earlier today.  That combined with yesterday's melted 0.26" makes for 0.35" total precip from yesterday's event.  Assuming around 1" of snow that fell and a little light rain at the end the snow to water ratio was probably <5:1 due to surface layer conditions.

Looks like there was a range in ratios, which is obviously not surprising.

DVN came in with 2.5" off of 0.29" for an 8.5-9:1 ratio.

It's kind of frustrating that I couldn't get an accurate reading on the actual snowfall here.  1" was probably pretty close, but who knows.  I threw a few snowballs at work yesterday, and you could tell it was extremely dense, almost slushy snow.

Just had a brief, but decent shower of decent sized snow pellets.  Sounded like rain hitting the roof.

This is east of Cleveland in a little town called Chardon right now. A steady lake effect band has developed and isn't moving...someone east of Cleveland may get a surprising amount come morning. attachicon.giftraffic cam.png

Sweet! I recognize that towns name. Heard it being mentioned before in LES events.

Wish I had something like that going hear! Just flurries tonight.

About 34° now.

Yeah, if Chardon isn't the snowiest place in Ohio they are within a few miles of it. This is somewhat notable for October in Ohio if some reports of a few inches can drop up.

Could be a few flurries flying around the city tom morning and perhaps tomorrow night again. Temperatures now down to 0.9C at the airport almost down to freezing. Low winds, clear skies-perfect recipe for some frost.

Woke up to a healthy layer of frost on most surfaces, forgot to factor in scraping frost off the car and was a bit late for work today. Hit a low right around 0 degrees last night, coldest night of the fall by far.

Areas to the north in the southern Ontario snowbelts reporting around 2-5cm of lake effect.

Quite the large lake effect band ongoing right now but I can't confirm whether or not its falling as rain or snow. Likely a mix rain/snow.

Yeah got down to about 32-33F (0C to 0.8C) in Toronto just above freezing. There was some frost in my area but I'm assuming clouds formed at night which prevented a killer frost.

Dewpoints are negative but SFC temperatures are still warm to support snow sticking on the ground during the day in these LES areas so as GEOS posted the picture, its mostly wet snow. And yeah they got a nice early dose of winter.

The next or last best chance of us getting some snow THIS month in the GTA is perhaps tonight or next week depending on the temperature anomalies.

Nice find! Looks very slushy on the roads. Doubt accumulations will mount to much throughout the day compared to the total precip that has fallen.

Nice appetizer before winter!

Got colder here, down to 39° with no sun. 39° is the average high here for December 1-3!

Yep, the 12z euro looks pretty interesting with the D5 wave... 35f line hugging southern shores of lake ontario. Would be a RN/SN mix situation for the GTA if it pans out before months end. By D6-8 the GFS has a strong CAD event across S On with a significant ice storm along the 401 corridor including the Northern parts of the GTA. The euro brings the wave much further west however, with a partial phase between the northern branch/ SW trough ejection with a western GLC.
