MikeGold
Looking from Tn towards Clingman's Dome. (GSNP webcam) You can see the next round of snow has commenced on the mtn tops.
WxBlue
It was spotty on campus with trace of snow when I woke up at 9 am so I'm assuming we had 1/2 before melting started.
MikeGold
Disdrometer(Autonomous Parsivel Units APU04)data from the mtn top is now live: http://wallops-prf.gsfc.nasa.gov/Field_Campaigns/IPHEx/Disdrometer/index.html Shows very clearly when the snow started/stopped this morning You can see the number of particles that were detected over a 10 second interval. (In this case showed up to 600 snowflakes/objects measured between the 2 heads of the disdrometer.) Neat! (Note that the precip total algorithm doesn't work very well.) Remember May 1 is the big day that the warm season field campaign starts. Probably the most meteorological equipment ever deployed in Western NC will occur. Much of the observations will be made available live on the internet including some mobile advanced doppler on wheels type equipment. No more beam blockage in the mtns! Very cool time to be a weather weenie!

MikeGold
Wow that is awesome Mike! I am now really looking forward to the difference that will make! This one is going to be practically in MET's backyard! It will be placed on a mtn top near Clyde for the Summer. http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/tools/radar/mobile/ It will have a great line of sight on my mtn top. The radar data will be available here: ftp://wallops-prf.gsfc.nasa.gov/Field_Campaigns/IPHEx/Radar (Link not live yet..should be a few days before May 1.) FYI..the first images from the GPM satellite are now available. http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/march/first-images-available-from-nasa-jaxa-global-rain-and-snowfall-satellite/#.UzGngahdWxq

WxBlue
UNC Asheville is getting crushed by heavy snow right now. Ground whited up in 5 minutes and I think we'll get an inch when this is done. This is easily the heaviest snow of the entire winter right here. EDIT: What a paste job... got 1/2 inch of snow in 10 minutes before it ended. All of that snow melted in 5 minutes thanks to strong sun.
