...STRONG AND WET SYSTEM FOR TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY...

.SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE NORTH OF HAWAII WILL COMBINE WITH LOW

PRESSURE OVER THE NORTHEAST PACIFIC TO BRING MODERATE TO HEAVY

SNOW AND GUSTY WINDS TO THE SIERRA TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY.

WINDS GUSTS OF 100 MPH OR MORE ARE LIKELY OVER THE SIERRA RIDGES

WITH GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH IN THE LOWER ELEVATIONS. THE STRONG GUSTS

WILL CREATE AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WITH WHITEOUT

CONDITIONS OVER MOUNTAIN PASSES AND IN WIND PRONE AREAS.

A STRONG COLD FRONT RAPIDLY MOVES THROUGH THE REGION WEDNESDAY

BRINGING VERY COLD AIR TO THE REGION. FLASH FREEZING OF ANY WATER ON

ROADS IS A CONCERN TOMORROW WITH VERY ICY CONDITIONS POSSIBLE

ACROSS WESTERN NEVADA. THE COLD AIR MASS LINGERS INTO NEW YEARS

WEEKEND.

TRAVEL WILL BE HAZARDOUS IN THE SIERRA TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY.

MOTORISTS SHOULD PLAN FOR LONG DELAYS AND POSSIBLE ROAD CLOSURES.

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS REMAINS IN

EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST WEDNESDAY.

* TIMING: HEAVY SNOW WILL BEGIN TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH

WEDNESDAY MORNING. A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW WILL OCCUR AT LAKE

LEVEL BEFORE CHANGING TO SNOW OVERNIGHT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE 7000 FEET. BELOW 7000

FEET...6 TO 12 INCHES WITH AMOUNTS UP TO 18 INCHES ALONG HIGHWAY

* WINDS: SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH.

GUSTS TO 50 MPH IN WIND PRONE AREAS...AND RIDGE GUSTS OF 100 MPH

* SNOW LEVELS: STARTING NEAR 7000 FEET THEN FALLING BELOW LAKE

LEVEL OVERNIGHT.

* IMPACTS: HEAVY SNOW WILL CAUSE SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL DELAYS IN

THE SIERRA TONIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING. BLOWING SNOW COULD

CAUSE WHITEOUT CONDITIONS OVER MOUNTAIN PASSES.
