Left Philly for the drive home at 5:00p.m. yesterday.  Shortly after hitting the NJ turnpike, torrential rains (stopping cars in the travel lanes).  Thunder and lighning close by, but the rain was so hard it was lmiting the view of the lightning.  I'm talking crazy rain.

Had a short break from that before entering into a more modest rain with great lightning shots for about half an hour.  Then somewhere up toward EWR, the same blinding rains moved in.  From there to the GW bridge were painful--no volume, just unable to see.

Had two--yes two-- lighning strikes within 50-100 yards of the car between EWR and Fort Lee.  Scary--blinding, loud as all get out.

Lots of flooded roadways.

Sounds like a long ride home but glad you made it.

2 day rain total of 2.80". For the month of September so far, I have measured 8.23" of rain. The lightning over the past 2 days was incredible. Pink lightning, cloud/ground, cloud/cloud, spider lightning. Not sure I have ever witnessed lightning this intense.

62.0°F

Both numbers are more than twice what I measured - 1.20" last 2 days, 3.92" for Sept. We had 4 different TS since Wednesday evening, and though the 4th (last evening) brought 0.56", none had any wind, no lighting closer than 2 miles, or more than 1-2 strikes/minute. Not sure if MBY was ever within a warning area, but they were all around, multiple times.

As far as my September rainfall to date, which is now up to 8.37", the >5" of rain that I received over the weekend helped. If not for that, I would be just under your total. My area was under several warnings, I lost count, so cannot give a number. As far as the lightning goes, WOW! Yesterday, from 3 pm on through 10 pm, the lightning did not let up. Although it was not the "strike every 2-3 seconds" like the night before, no more than 30 - 60 seconds would go by without a strike, many of them very close with house shaking thunder. Hail during the 2 day period was nothing to write home about. The largest was quarter size and was very brief. Wednesday night, pea-sized hail whitened the ground.

Question ..last night there were several bangs of thunder that rolled on for 20 seconds or more. i noticed the lightning right beforehand was 2-3 quick, bright flashes. What in the sam hell caused the thunder to roll on and on for more than 20 seconds like that? Is that to CTC?

I think that has to do with inversions...like the sound waves get "trapped" and this allows them to just roll.

After 3 more disappointing non-severe days I got a little surprise this afternoon. A co-worker called me over to a window to look out around 2:40. I wasn't expecting anything today but it had gotten really dark and windy, and for a minute I could see some lowering and rotation almost right over us. I quickly checked the radar then ran outside (didn't even tell anyone I was leaving!). I got a few nice pictures and some video. It didn't turn out to be much but it certainly looked good for a little while. It was like summer was saying goodbye for the last time. I'm a little less bitter about the past few days now :)
