Interior NW Burbs & Hudson Valley - Discussion

AS OF 9 AM...A BAND OF VERY HEAVY SNOW WITH SNOWFALL RATES OF 3 TO

6 INCHES PER HOUR HAS OVERSPREAD COASTAL PORTIONS OF THE

REGION...COLLOCATED WITH AN INTENSE FRONTOGENETIC BAND LIFTING

NORTH FROM CENTRAL NJ AND OFF THE OCEAN. REPORTS OF 3 TO 4 INCHES

IN 30 MINUTES HAVE BEEN COMING INTO THE OFFICE UNDER THIS BAND. IN

ADDITION...WIND GUSTS OF 35 TO 45 MPH ARE DEVELOPING ALONG THE

COAST...RESULTING IN NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY AT TIMES.

THIS HEAVY SNOW BAND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK NORTHWARD INTO THE

LOWER HUDSON VALLEY AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT THROUGH 11

AM...COMBINED WITH 25 TO 35 MPH GUSTS...WITH RAPIDLY DETERIORATING

CONDITIONS. AROUND 1 FT OF SNOW LIKELY FROM MID MORNING THROUGH

MID AFTERNOON ACROSS THE INTERIOR WITH THIS BAND.

Assume that's from Upton?

The 4km NAM has a crushing band over our region starting sometime around 10 or 11 pm and continuing for 3-4 hours.  I imagine we'll see some 20"+ totals in jackpot zones if that comes to fruition.

21f w/moderate snow

2.2" new on the ground

I think we will avoid the dry slot or at least only be minimally affected. May be a lull in precip rates (ie light snow) for a while but not much if any time completely shut off. May be a different story just off to our S&E.

Does anyone have the link to a model that shows the dry slot forming  futurecast?

He left out this snippet from Upton.

Snow didn't really start getting heavier until about 7 here. Now have 3 inches. Snowing like gangbusters. Beautiful flakes! I stood outside for 10 minutes and had 1/4 inch on me! Amazing! Hard to see more than 3 houses down the street.

I must be in a snow hole here cause I haven't seen anything better than some moderate bursts back to light snow

Dry slot already in jersey.. This is something to watch

Looks like radar filling to the s/e of NYC. This is moving n/nw. This should keep us going for a while.

New AFD from Albany:

THIS FIRST ROUND OF SNOW IS BEING FORCING BY ISENTROPIC LIFT ON
THE 290K SURFACE...WITH MAINLY LIGHT TO OCCASIONALLY MODERATE
INTENSITY. THERE IS A HEALTHY WEST-EAST ORIENTED BAND OF HEAVY SNOW
OVER LONG ISLAND/NYC/SOUTHERN CT APPROACHING ULSTER...DUTCHESS
AND LITCHFIELD COUNTIES. SNOWFALL RATES COULD APPROACH OR EXCEED 1
INCH PER HOUR THROUGH EARLY AFTERNOON WITH THIS BAND. HOWEVER...IT
IS EXPECTED THAT THE BEST FORCING WILL THEN SHIFT EASTWARD INTO
CENTRAL/EASTERN NEW ENGLAND LATER THIS AFTERNOON.
ALSO AT THIS
TIME A DRY SLOT SEEN NICELY ON WATER VAPOR IMAGERY...IS
APPROACHING FROM PA/DELMARVA REGION AND WILL TEND TO LIGHTEN
PRECIP INTENSITY AND ALSO ALLOW FOR SOME LIGHT SLEET/FREEZING RAIN
TO MIX IN ACROSS EASTERN ULSTER...DUTCHESS AND LITCHFIELD
COUNTIES. ANY ICE ACCRETION IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY LIGHT...WITH
SNOW BEING THE PREDOMINANT HAZARD. MID LEVEL DRYING IS EXPECTED TO
RESULT IN POSSIBLE LOSS OF ICE NUCLEI...RESULTING IN THE MIXED
PRECIP ACROSS SOUTHERN AREAS.

THEN...THE UPPER LOW IS FORECAST TO PIVOT NORTHEASTWARD TRACKING
JUST TO OUR SOUTH. THIS UPPER LOW WILL SERVE TO QUICKLY COOL THE
COLUMN TO CHANGE ALL PRECIPITATION BACK TO SNOW. ALSO...PER CSTAR
RESEARCH...AS LOW CLOSES OFF IS WHEN A SIGNIFICANT PIVOTING
MESOSCALE SNOWBAND IS LIKELY TO SET UP. THERE IS STILL SOME
QUESTION AS TO EXACTLY WHERE THIS BAND COULD SET UP...BUT
CONCEPTUAL MODEL DIAGNOSTICS COMBINED WITH MODEL OUTPUT FROM THE
00Z ECMWF AND 12Z NAM INDICATE THIS BAND TO AFFECT A FAIRLY LARGE
AREA FROM THE CAPITAL REGION AND CATSKILLS EASTWARD. THEREFORE WE
HAVE SLIGHTLY INCREASED SNOW ACCUMULATIONS FOR THE CAPITAL
DISTRICT...SARATOGA REGION AND POINTS EASTWARD. WELL OVER A FOOT
OF SNOW IS EXPECTED FOR AREAS THAT ARE AFFECTED BY THE PIVOTING
BAND.

Front-end is looking somewhat meager for extreme northern areas like Dutchess and Ulster. About an inch new, snowing lightly.
