Ginx snewx
the 2/8/13 event also crushed the shore...a lot of shoreline homes were damaged from Sandwich to the North Shore...it had a very impressive storm surge. the event has actually reshaped the way EPA / DEP handles shoreline construction! just because a rinky-dink town of 7000 people nw of 495 in MA had a foot-and-a-half of powder does not mean the entire region was spared a big impact I was amazed at his ignorance of the true impact. Like I said 2nd to 78, historical storm with all the frills.
TalcottWx
The 12/13/07 storm was an interesting one. I was a sophomore in HS and they let us out at noon. I remember flakes starting to fall around that same time. I remember my friends in the public system being stuck on buses well after dark. I spent the evening making $$ shoveling out the front of L Street Tavern.
TalcottWx
what!? that storm had a huge junk of the region SE of 95 without power. some places were out for 7 days...in the dead of winter. some towns were completely in the dark - entire communities. what are you talking about? I had CNN and Fox News walking up and down my street, no big deal according to Tip. blizzard conditions and I couldn't see the house 30 feet across the street due to the blowing and falling heavy snow, yup no big deal! Tropopause_Fold
Lol The level of tree destruction was impressive.. worst in a hundred years in some parts? it was incredible. from the upper cape up to the marshfield/duxbury area then SW down to wareham...some spots were flattened. and it wasn't just SE MA that got hammered...parts of CT were snowed in for days...and not just quiet little suburban communities. i remember the posts from Ryan and Quincy talking about the problems in the cities along the south coast of CT. i have some of the nstar power outage maps saved...it's pretty amazing really. just SE MA alone, there were easily > 1/4 million without power. CoastalWx
It is a little too early since we typically want to see the advancement in the latter part of Oct, but I don't see how this can hurt matters ehh. Yeah, just mean as we start October, it looks good to begin with.
CoastalWx
Pillow talk right there... except now with this SAI business is this potentially a bad thing? lol I'll take it all the same. Luckily the low retros enough to at least try to pop some ridging in Canada. Net result is a pattern that isn't a torch, but not very cool with the cold supply shut off from that low. So far, that's the worst tree damage I have ever seen and that includes the 104mph Macroburst in Brockton back in May 1996. Whole swaths of trees were flattened. HIPPYVALLEY
Exactly. A quick tenth of an inch of ice at 8 AM on a Wednesday could be more impactful than Feb 2013, but in terms of the meteorology Feb 2013 can stand toe to toe with some of the best in New England. It was certainly one of the bigger recent events in the Pioneer Valley. (Springield Ma to Brattleboro) Greenfield had 22" but Northampton/Easthampton had unofficial reports of 26 - 28" and was in a snow emergency for days with all the main streets having parking bans. ORH_wxman
The south coast and SE MA def had it worse for damage...they stayed SE of the CF for a good chunk of that storm until perhaps the final 4-5 hours.
Baroclinic Zone
Low of 41F. Consistently getting lows now down in the lower 40s and into the 30s on these clear nights. Trees are starting to change, especially in the swampy areas.

CoastalWx
I feel like that was pretty poorly forecast too. I could be wrong but I don't remember really harshly worded warnings about the wind issues? So I thought about this. The winds were strong, but I think it was also a perfect storm of snow sort of flash freezing. Basically you had heavy wet snow plastered to the trees in the beginning. After 00z when the uber S+ came in, temps dropped to near 30 and you now had all this wet snow freezing up and new snow getting dumped on all the vegetation to the point where it wasn't even sliding off...just getting dumped onto the trees and weighing it down since it was still a bit sticky. Throw in 60-70mph winds and boom.

I can only imagine if this was midweek daylight storm. My winds were stronger than Sandy and rivaled that outer band we had from Irene.

I can only imagine if this was midweek daylight storm. My winds were stronger than Sandy and rivaled that outer band we had from Irene. The storm hit at a perfect time... Friday night. Everyone was basically stuck inside all weekend and it gave the crews 48 hours to start moving snow. The commutes on Monday and Tuesday were absolute disasters because the highways still weren't totally clear. New Haven and Hartford had large areas totally impassable until Wednesday following the storm. If it was a Monday storm... and not a Friday storm... there is no question the state would have been paralyzed for days in a way reminiscent of 1978. Tropopause_Fold
yeah...'cane force at Logan even. the wind was insane...it just went on and on. it has a "different" sound when your power is out in the middle of the night because there's just no ambient noise in your home at all. so all you hear is just the house making fooked up sounds and limbs cracking. In 78 sure the snow was insane but what I remember most was the shriek of the wind in a powerless house.
