weatherwiz
GFS still showing the potential for some strong convection in the Northeast next week with NY/PA on Wednesday and much of southern New England on Thursday. I would say looks like our first fall low topped squall line event except this setup could feature some decent instability for September standards. CapturedNature
Coldest in SNE? Joe Furey @StormFurey20m Deep valley of Bakerville, CT is 35 degrees with a very light frost showing this morning. Grab a light jacket! pic.twitter.com/vopuhmx9EQ Where did he get that from? Is he making stuff up? http://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?site=NWS&issuedby=ALY&product=HYD It looks like it was actually 41° in Bakerville this morning. The coldest I saw in CT was 40 at Norfolk. In SNE it looked like 36° was the low at several locations in Mass. It looks like SLK's 29 was the nations coldest spot this morning as several of us thought. It's nice to have the northeast represented when it's usually intermountain west locations this time of year.

Yeah I dunno - I think the coop observer has another thermometer that he reads when he sends Joe in an observation then uses the official one with the correct siting for the coop ob. I was just talking about this on Twitter with someone saying they actually got down to 35 even though the RR8 data is 41.

The only way that makes sense to me is if they report officially at 7 AM and the temp then fell after that time to 35 (meaning the low would be 35 on tomorrow's report). But that seems unlikely. Bootleg.

ORH_wxman
Sounds like he gives weenie obs on the temps so that he can get his readings on the news. They don't sound very reliable when you look at other data...and the fact that the official coop is different.

Same with the dude up in Staffordville.Loves them He probably likes them because they are consistent. I Jeff in Staffordville uses his COOP thermometer so that's probably correct. I don't know if the Bakerville guy is different but my guess is the same. FWIW, Staffordville was 42° this morning but he is closer to the lake so that might have kept him up a tick from me. It very well may have been 39° down the hill from me because they are 200' lower but who knows. I don't think they would let me put up a thermometer in the middle of the field there...lol. I remember back in the 80s it was easier to weed out those guys because the weather watcher network was so vetted and tightly controlled. You rarely published numbers from someone that wasn't part of your weather watcher or NWS network. After a while errant numbers are going to stand out though. BGM had a similar issue through Facebook this past week. Somebody reporting 2" hail, but the picture they sent in looks like half inch hail that was clumped together and refrozen for effect. People also try and pass ice cubes off as hail.

I'm normally pretty good at vetting pictures and reports. We got this one And it was clearly a lot bigger than the other reports at the time... so I wound up finding the guys phone number through his email address and a white pages search and talked to him on the phone to make sure it was legit. Twitter/Facebook and everything else makes it harder to separate legit reports from bogus ones.
