This is one of the most upsetting and disturbing stories I can remember in a long time. I would love to rip every inch of skin off the guy who did this and then rip his organs out, Predator style.

People are so sick. I don't understand what is wrong with some people.

It's so frustrating. Hopefully they all had a refreshing summer full of vacation.

And no worries, because they have congressional duties they'll still get paid come Tuesday. I mean we have to reign in spending, but heaven forbid they all also have to skip a paycheck.

Thank God I'm a gov't employee that happens to really enjoy my job.

If there is a shutdown how does that impact you guys? I assume forecasters are considered "essential employees"?

Right we're all considered essential (management and techs as well). We'd be subject to furloughs on any non-operational shifts on holidays (i.e. Columbus Day). And since we'd technically be under a furlough come Tuesday if things shutdown, we would not be getting paid if it lasts the full pay period. And with this climate I'm not sure they would pay that time worked back either once it works itself out.

Probably more problematic would be if the people that help fix things behind the scenes aren't deemed essential and we have problems in the field. How we get in touch with them is an issue. We do have enough supplies to get us through the majority of the month though. Things like helium for the upper air launches are usually stocked for about that long.

And as you know, none of this is the official stance on it. ;)

Ugh what a mess. Hopefully something gets worked out but it's not looking good.

It's pretty interesting some of the scenarios that are going to play out if this isn't resolved. If you planned a vacation (as someone has in our office) your leave is cancelled. If you are ordered to report for work and don't (so continue with travel plans) you would be considered AWOL. You can try and change those days from annual leave to furlough days to avoid this, but then there is no guarantee that you are paid back for those annual leave days that you earned throughout the year.

Likewise, if you are having a child (also happening at our office) the same rules apply. You can take maternity to have the kid (sick leave). You have to be furloughed to have a baby, and then risk not being paid for that time either.

Ridiculous.

What a mess. I work for the state of NY, but deal with federal agencies a lot, and I'm still not sure who's essential and who's not. I guess I'll find out this week. I'm a little ticked about the 2.5% "deficit reduction" furlough haircut we took with no raise in forever, but that's nothing compared to what you guys are going through.

Let me rant for a minute: I left the private sector for a government job for reasons that included, believe it or not, a sense that I would be able to do some good. I took a significant paycut that is only partly offset by slightly better benefits (and I'm skeptical that my pension will survive intact). I do really good, valuable work, if I can brag for a second, and I don't see lazy people at my office. It frustrates me enormously that some politicians try to make a name by targeting us.

I mean I can't say the same, but like any workplace there are those that perform above and beyond expectations and those that do just enough to get by. However, it's the latter that provide fodder for the sweeping generalizations of gov't employees.

I'm not so naive to think that there aren't lazy folks out in government work, just like there were at my private sector employers. But they've got to be the exception. The people I deal with at various agencies are more than competent and considering the circumstances, they respond to my requests pretty quickly.

Is that term actually used in your office?
