Tolland is a disaster of Oaks. Did you notice how light to almost nil the acorns are this year?

I don't have any but my folks have some in Somers and I never paid attention.  There aren't too many in the woods in Union where I tap so it's hard to tell.

I could get some young maple trees if you want to replace your oaks.  In full sun they grow by 1-2' a year.

I don't know Kev, there are a lot. Funny thing is that this specific area is local to oaks. Just down the street it's more maple. This area has a lot of ledge and oaks seem to grow in tough terrain so maybe that has something to do with it.

I'm no arboriist, but I don't think ledge would have anything to do with it.  If you look at maples that get felled in storms, they really don't have a deep root penetration.  They're expansive but pretty shallow.

I've seen oaks in a lot of rocky places around here like the Blue Hills, and in sandy/clay type soils which is also what we have. Just a guess.  These aren't very tall oaks either. Just a few that are rather tall.

Well if you'd be so kind as to come and take them down for me you could keep all the wood to burn. It would last you years and years. There's about 12-14 of them I'd like to take down , and a white pine . Lol

I'm in upstate NY, in a forested area.

We have primarily maples and ash.

I have a couple of oaks on my property that are producing abundant acorns this year.

Interestingly, last year they had the fewest acorns I had ever seen.

Is there some connection with what you are observing this year in CT?  I wonder.

Why don't you take them down?  You can chip the branches for your landscaping and enjoy your HHH summers siziing and splitting.

I don't have a saw, don't like using them and these things are massive . It would cost me probably 10-20 k to have them taken down

You should keep that a secret.

There's no way that should cost you that much.  THose can be taken down in a day.  Whoever's quoting you that is looking to take you for a ride.  Buy a commercial Stihl for $380-400; but a 30-40 ton splitter for about 2k.  Rent a 12" chipper (that'll ensure you can blow your chips far and wide) and you'll be good. You'll save a several  hundred off the cost from the firewood you'd produce and the mulch you wouldn't need to buy.

Temp struggling.

lol. That's all.  Just drop 2500 dollars like that on tree cutting equipment like it's nothing.  It's nice that people have cash to throw around like that.

LOL..Nelly is the reason this song has become a smash..Country folks need rappers to fire up hits..

This song was already big before the remix came out, at least for those that listen to country. I love how Nelly randomly resurfaced for this song. Anything involving cruising around with the windows down...I wonder why...

Nope--it's an investment.  He was citing 10K to take down some trees.  By getting the equipment he:

1.  Saves $8000 off the bat

2.  No need to buy firewood for several years (a year or two if he heats by wood, but I don't think he does).  What's the going rate for a cord of wood down in Tolland?

It's really no different than someone buying a $1500 mower instead of having LL come over and mow your lawn for a couple years.

Either way, it's a crap load of money for something that he will likely never use.  We're talking about a guy who clearly doesn't like nature if he has to deal with it.  I see Kevin cringing to have to take down a 3" sapling.  He does not like saws.

But again, I'm on  a forum where people seem to have endless amounts of money, so I am definitely with the wrong crowd.

So do I.  Who's in that group?

I suppose I  could get rid of the saw and splitter and spend all my money on oiil and electric heat.  I wonder how much I'd be wasting if I did that?  (with the two stoves going 24/7, we limit out oil usage to about 500 gallons/year for 3200 sq/ft.).  I suppose I could also buy new cars instead of used (actually, this year I did buy my first new car since 1995).
