Optimistic results so far.

ORH receiving the most votes for 81-90"....they havent produced a season in that range since 1996-1997 when they logged 87.5"...most notably for the infamous "Cantore Storm" and the "April Fools Day Blizzard" that season which accounted for about 60" of that total. 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 are the closest to that range at 76.9" and 92.6" respectively since then.

Before 1996-1997, you then have to go back to 1977-1978 to get another total in that range at 85.9"...they also did it the previous year in 1976-1977 with 89.0". So I guess you could say they are "due".

What did ORH have officially last season?

Regarding the poll, I find it interesting that with the BOS numbers, that no red-tagged met has voted for over 50" of snow...lol.  But there are 20 votes for BOS to go over 50"... the weenies know what they want, but this time of year there's always a lot of "optimistic" feelings and anticipation.  I can't really remember a year on the boards when everyone going in was expecting a clunker, because what fun is that?

No PVD?

I've always wondered how these 3 (and sometimes 4 when Providence is added) cities are the guage for snowfall.

Why not have a south coastal ct city like New London, New Haven, or Bridgeport in the mix?  What about Springfield, or Pitsfield?  The diversity from cities along the souther coast in comparison to the other Big 4 would be pretty cool to see.

Is it really all about major airports that makes these places the prime locales for recording snowfall?

Well they are the only places that will give us relatively accurate snowfall data consistently as first order climo sites...unless there is a known top grade coop...such as North Foster or some place like that.

BDR gives us snowfall too as they are a first order climo site, but they are often in that gray zone between SNE and NYC subforums so they aren't always included. But there obviously isn't a data-constraint issue for them, so we can use them too.

Hey Garth, ever notice Stoughton as a good weenie spot for snow when you lived there? They do well at 200+'.

Yup. For the region it was pretty nice in that respect. Even compared to adjacent towns like Brockton and Easton and even Sharon sometimes. Obviously Blue Hill right up the road is a different animal all together.

The airports have so called trained spotters, but you still can have inconsistencies. Logan's spotter is actually in Winthrop.

He's right across the water from the airport, no more than 3 miles away.  He's a reliable observer.

I've noticed he seemed a little low....either from

Ocean or just blown away snow. I didn't live far from water in Dorchester (now in Weymouth) but we had some inconsistencies. And if anything I'm very conservative.

Hi Eleanor. I know this isn't a decision you have much input into but don't you think that BOS is a poor representative of Boston climo? I remember growing up in the NYC area when the battery along the water in Brooklyn was used. They moved the official station to Central Park which geographically makes much more sense roughly 50 years ago. Fortunately, they were running obs from there all along so all the records updated. I specifically remember the 12/26/47 storm record (broken in 2006) went from 25.8 to 26.4. Temperatures also. I don't know why we're still using the area away from the majority of Bostonians.

The old observer (who is a friend of mine) used to measure near his house in Eastie. Although not the airport, it was right next to it practically and measured in a baseball field.  Even in a winter with 80+" of snow like '10-'11 we were around 2" apart iirc. Pretty good. Snowfall measuring is one of the most inexact things, but there have been times where my obs over the last two winters were quite different.....probably because of marine and BLSN issues near the coast where the Winthrop guy is.

I swear I remember that storm. It seems impossible as I was a year old. But I have a memory of my father lifting me to the window to look at heavy snow at that time of year.

80. In 13 winters I will be. This is why there is such urgency in my weenie ism.

The Boston Common or public garden would make much more sense. Even MIT.
