After a nice weekend, the ugly head of humidity and summer return

I got just over .5".  By far, the best rain I've seen in a month.  Of course, just a couple miles to my south there has been over 1".  Hope you break your .25" barrier.

I've been watching the Burke rain shield holding strong all morning long.

Have a look at the "returns" south of Fairfax City.

This summer has certainly been enjoyable weather -wise, but it sure has been boring. A lackluster severe season, followed by minimal extreme heat, sprinkled with moderate precip in many areas (no excessive drought to complain about), and topped off with a snoozer of a tropical season (so far) has made this a very "vanilla summer". Maybe Mother Nature is saving the excitement for the upcoming winter, lol. For now, we can wait with baited breath to see if temps can break 90 next week.... Yippee.

We can hack it!! This summer has been a piece of cake..lets ride this bad boy home now

I know the current talking point is that this summer has been so awesome, but I would say it has been tolerable rather than awesome...

The month period  from June 24 - July 23  was pretty classic DC nasty...~+3 departure, average high of ~90..oppressively humid...only one day with a min below 70,  17 days with a min of 75+....7 day heat wave with 5 mins of 80+....I don't think too many "awesome" summers have a 30 day period like that...that was a persistent nasty pattern with a brutal 7 day peak....

I think this summer has 5 things going for it...

1) It is way way better than the last 3

2) We have avoided any of the kind of persistent warmth at the front and back ends that extends summer and makes it seem much longer..1st 3 weeks of June and the previous 2 weeks of August have been very reasonable in the averages with a number of nice days...We shouldn't speak too soon though, as this week doesn't look too good, and not sure about September...

3) The core of the persistent heat was moved up a couple weeks versus climo..pretty much in an ideal spot if you are going to have a nasty 30 day stretch..

4) Our best 2 week stretch of weather this summer (end of July/beginning of August) was during a period that is usually disgusting

5) Our heat has been mostly min based...we will finish the summer below average on maxes with below average 90 degree days

In general the only thing I consider awesome about summer is the lack of clothing being worn around town. As summers go this one has been pretty tolerable.

In my opinion, this is a huge reason for the perception of a "piece of cake" summer. While the periods mentioned where the minimums sucked were statistically horrid, I slept through those nights in a nice air conditioned house. When I was outside during the heat of the day, the maximums were pretty close to normal, thus feeding the perception of a "piece of cake" summer even in the midst of a statistically hotter (+3) than average period. Of course the cooler than average (and decidedly less humid) periods this summer have contributed to this perception and made it very easy to ignore the numbers.  Statistics don't lie, but they don't always tell the truth.

Thank you.  I've not understood where the perception of "awesome" summer has come from.  On the whole, this summer will finish near average.  Not a lot of 90+ weather, but plenty of humid, nasty mid and upper 80s.  We had some seriously nice stretches of weather, but that is supposed to happen occasionally, even during summer.  Recent summers have warped the perception of summer around here.  And like you said, this week and perhaps next, look horrid.  Pretty nice day, though.
