The last 15 Augusts based on 1981-2010 norms...we have a hill to climb..I still like above normal

1997: -0.5

1998: +1.3

1999: +1.6

2000: -3.0

2001: +0.8

2002: +3.0

2003: +0.7

2004: -2.2

2005: +2.0

2006: +2.5

2007: +1.6

2008: -0.2

2009: +1.8

2010: +2.1

2011: +1.9

2012: +2.9

anything +1 and less will be fine with me.  We saw last month how much we can go + just based on ridiculous min departures

I guess, when I read the summer forecasts from you, Zwyts, and captial weather gang, and whomever else, I really discount/don't really care about the mins. When I see a forecast, I tend to reference it in regard to departure from normal highs. And, on that count I think Matt's call has been pretty damn good.

Another cloudy non-summer day. Just 68 degrees here, with rain. We may have positive nighttime mins giving us positive departures for the summer months, but it has not been a hot summer. We've had a lot of cooler days. Hoping tomorrow is as nice as forecast.

When does drought watch start?

Not big totals up north but my forecast of 50% chance rain looks kinda meh up there. Ppl complaining on Twitter. Not bad DC and south so far.

I bet you'd be ecstatic if we had this weather in January :)

Thank goodness for that

I still haven't figured out how sterling does their departures the last couple years. There is obviously rounding going on that I haven't quite gotten yet

It is all about rounding.  Take 8/1.  83/70. So, the average is 76.5.  They round up in the climo report to 77.  Meanwhile the norms are 88/71, which taken at face value would be 79.5, a -3 departure for the day.  But, the daily norm because of the rounding and smoothing they do with the 30 year averages turns out to be 79.  So, you have a rounded 77 and a rounded and smoothed 79, for a -2 departure.  Doesn't much matter for monthly climo since the unrounded values are used, and it minimally matters for daily climo because, really, outside of us who the hell cares.
