bigger negative departure day than positive departure for whats being called the hottest July ever. Quite the feat to pull off record low High maxes at the climo hottest day of the year.

the heat was impressive for its duration

You laughed when we talked about the euro op/ens trough a week ago, but now you're using d15 for ridge retrogression? ;)

the WAR did get stronger right up until verification time... that's why eastern new england is getting significant rain tonight.  what's changed this time is the pattern over the arctic and canada which is preventing a retrogression

To be fair though... they had been banging this drum all summer;  so we finally get an episode where it succeeds.

Also, it is clear that folks just don't like summer around here.  "Summer" has insufficient advocacy by the collective pool of contributors; to merely make mention of a heat signal on the horizon seems to launch a blitz of counter-arguing post content, when if someone wants to make mention of Tughill Plateau unseasonable chill, there is a lot of pleasantries exchanged.   Interesting...

The signal is early... but there are hemispheric clues suggesting subtropical ridge strength increasing then.  Time will tell.

days like today are disgusting

It hasn't rained here yet today; just dry and a cool reprieve from the heat.  I don't have central-air or even a window AC in the main living area of my home.  Just a fan... I had 91F on the wall thermometer once, and never less than 80 for 10 straight days... It just added up and eroded my patience. I'm therefore enjoying the curtains waving in the windows as the 65F air passes through.  It was needed by the soul...  jesus.

I like warmth, but I can do without the high dews. I'm on the ridge retrogression train after a week into August too. I was just giving Mike a hard time.

It is obvious some people do not like it when they are wrong.

I'm not sure anyone actually "likes" it when they are wrong....

Regardless, the EC ensembles did a good job portraying the weakening of the WAR. This is what led to better confidence that the troughiness would verify in the Northeast. Earlier efforts were trying to drive troughs into the WAR that wasn't shunted well east, but rather retrograding underneath us...hard to squash it like that.

I do think the ridge will re-establish itself at some point in August. But for now, we get a nice reprieve...no sign of it for the next 10 days or so. EC ensembles hint at a restrengthening by the 2nd week of August.

I think we just wanted a change...you even said it in another post, this cool-down was needed by the soul.

I think everyone here enjoys a taste of heat and humidity, but we also like changing weather and not a stake humid pattern. The same thing happens in the winter...if its dry and cold for 3 weeks straight, we get antsy for something to happen.

I'm all for hot days if they are broken up with days like this once in a while. Change in weather is what's exciting about it.

But the collective on the whole is here because of snow and winter. Winter storms are when membership grows fastest and the servers max out on users online. It's just the way it is...there's something magical about snow.
