I really hope we do a ski GTG this year, obviously assuming Tim Kelley's hurricanes don't flatten all mountains ;)

I got my new skis mounted (Heinos ski and cycle, one of the best local shops around) and I'm already checking the forecast for both Killington and A-basin for stoke:)

I get to ski with Tim maybe 6-8 times a season up here and wish everyone could join in. That's always a great session of skiing and geeking out to mountain weather...and Tim's always offering to buy the first beer afterwards, haha. Would be fun to see if he'd tag along on a ski gtg.

Realistically it can dust white up here in September (has happened in AUG, but not realistic to hope for) so we are getting closer...

September snow is roughly twice a decade on Mt. Mansfield, at least in the way that they report it.  I’m not sure if they record snowfall at the beginning of the day, or at the end, but that would make a real difference in whether or not we’re getting the actual occurrence.  I have all the Mt. Mansfield snowpack data in a spreadsheet (I may have sent it to you as well PF) and I put together the October, September, and August snowfall numbers in a post last August.  There is the rare occurrence in August as PF indicated, but the executive summary for September and October is as follows:

“So essentially it’s about twice a decade that there is accumulating snow on Mt. Mansfield in September, and about once a decade that there isn’t accumulating snow on Mt. Mansfield in October.”

More details can be found in the full post.  On that note, that August, September, and October quarter is one of my favorites each year in NNE – cool nights, cool/warm days, drier air often abounds with the movement of cold fronts, Indian summer, harvest, fairs, ski swaps, frosts, bugs go away, fall colors, first snows, first skiing, and the fact that it’s all a harbinger to the typically plentiful snow and skiing of the November through May period.  I think June and July are really the only odd men out of the year in that respect, but they have their redeeming qualities in that they are great for hitting the water and stuff like that.  It’s neat to realize that the August to October quarter starts in roughly a week.

September 17th, Bretton Woods fired off a fan gun... first artificial snow of the season ;)

Sunday River usually pulls this off first. BW has been very serious about opening early in the last 5 years or so and it's great to see them testing the snow guns (even though it means very little in the grand scheme of things)

Goals for this winter season:

Cell phone tracking goals:   200K vertical feet, at least one day with >25K verticle feet

Ski/Snowboard trip plans (in order of priority in terms of financial planning - I board until I've hit my budget limit for the season):

- 1 week in Utah in hopefully crazy powder

- 2 trips to Sunday River

- At least 2 Weekday trips to Ragged Mountain

- At least 1 Crotched Mtn Midnight Madness

- Trip to either Jay Peak or Stowe (this is the trip that depends on my budget in March)

Hopefully its a great season!  Post your trip plans or goals here :)

200K vertical is very doable

Even at my lowly Wachusett that is only 200 runs off the top. Figure I would do 4-5 of this x 40 days or so

Not even including the bajillions of smaller runs

Is there a good app to track that?

Does Wachusett use RFID or any sort of scanning system at the lift?

I've heard of some good apps for that sort of thing and know people that use them, but can't think of the names off the top of my head.  I don't pay any attention to it, because Stowe's RFID system just tracks all that for me.  The lift operators will tell you at any time how many runs you've taken, how many days you've skied, etc.  And I don't have time to ski any where else in the winter, haha, so all my seasonal data is logged in that system.

I would like to hit 70 days this year. Last year I hit 84 but I won't have the same opportunities this year. I would like each ski day to be bell to bell ie first chair to last chair. I used to be better about making first chair every day. I tend to be about 20 minutes late unless its a true powder day.

My kids are 5 and 3.

They skiied for the first time last winter but we only went once.

My goal is to take them at least 3 times this winter and see them progress and enjoy the slopes.

For myself, I want snow from December through March and to average at least 3 days a week of Nordic skiing.  And of course that must include hitting the Bolton backcountry. :snowing:

Wachusett does random scans. Not useful at all

RFID would be great

Too many knuckleheads there though

I use an app called Itrailmap3d for skiing. It is excellent in the way u can manipulate the maps. There is tracking but I only rarely used it because it seriously drains the battery. But I just got a battery case for the phone so i can leave the tracking on. For hiking and biking, I use motionX gps. Love it and have used it extensively.
