CapturedNature
The Apex dates...date of climatological peak in normal mean temperature. We're almost there! I remember you posted this last year and it's good data. If I recall, some of the northern New England locations had dates earlier in the month. It's interesting that they have normals for Staffordville, CT. I think he's only been a coop since 2002 but it's close to my average so far of 7/23. It's interesting how that works but it's obviously logarithmic equation smoothing the data. My peak of 70 (69.6) actually lasts from 7/15-7/30 and I just expanding it to 3 decimal places to find the peak of 69.721 on 7/23.
Ginx snewx
Apex see ya, all downhill temp wise towards our best synoptic storms and a step closer to winter. Despite Forks comment all of us enjoy all types of weather, especially extremes but a heat wave without a 100 degree reading is akin to a 11 inch snowfall. Almost Jerry almost. Enjoy the change almost time to track tropical until then some synoptic rains which we need, its the only thing on the Hype board.
snowman21
It's interesting how that works but it's obviously logarithmic equation smoothing the data. My peak of 70 (69.6) actually lasts from 7/15-7/30 and I just expanding it to 3 decimal places to find the peak of 69.721 on 7/23. This go around they used Gaussian filtering on a two week window when calculating normal temperatures. The past few normal sets just used spline interpolation of monthly means. Most people don't give a second thought to what normal means and probably equate normal with average, but it's not quite so simple when you dig into the methodology. There's obviously some +/- here, but this is about the time of year where we can start saying we're on the backside of the average temperature curve which is why I re-posted the dates. The one thing that bugs me about the normals process is that no one looks in detail at internal consistency or "what makes sense". It's just an algo and they press the button and that's it, whatever results it spits out sticks.
