If we can dip below 50 tonight...and it should be close...it would be the first back to back sub 50 degree nights in July since 1988.

I find it amazing that July '88 had sub 50° nights. All I remember from that summer is the drought and excessive heat.

I have good memories of my family sleeping together in the basement, we had no AC.... Good times.

The lakes are sure to keep most of Michigan out of the real cold. Probably cooler in Indy than Copper Harbor tonight.

Well drought cuts both ways. It often enhances the diurnal range which means hotter highs and lower lows. On 7/3/1988, LAF had a high of 90 and a low of 49.

Seems like a bias toward the early part of the month. Not that many toward the end.

That's what I saw too.

Yep. Last summer had a few of those days.

87/55 on June 14, 91/53 on June 15, and 90/53 on June 27.

So, sub 50 again tomorrow morning?

Dust Bowl routinely had 35-40 degree swings. Of course when your highs are 105-110 it is a little less noticeable.

I don't know about tomorrow morning...it's a tough call. Wouldn't be surprised if we get an hourly of 50 or 51 and we're waiting for the intrahour. Temp right now is the same as it was at this time last night.

     63.0  JULY 20-21, 1996

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR A WEEKEND IS CALCULATED BY ADDING
SATURDAY`S HIGH AND LOW TO SUNDAY`S HIGH AND LOW AND DIVIDING BY
4.

IT IS NOTEWORTHY THAT MANY OF THE TOP 10 COLDEST IN CHICAGO WERE
BACK IN THE LATE 1800S AND EARLY 1900S WHEN THE OFFICIAL
OBSERVATIONS WERE TAKEN CLOSE TO THE LAKE...MEANING THE COOLER LAKE
WATERS LIKELY INFLUENCED THE TEMPERATURES.

This is strangely worded for Chicago. First top 10 in the headline, then top 5 at the end of the next paragraph. How about..."tied for the second coldest July weekend in recorded history for Chicago". Semantics, I know.

Oh boy...that 70*F high at Metro Airport is going to piss michsnowfreak off.

Aggravating but not at all unexpected. Its completely what I expect at DTW anymore. Every once in a while when they radiate good or come up noticeably low with the high....THATS when Im surprised, not a day like today. Temp rockets up and crashes back down intra-hour? Thats SO par for the course here lol. Everyone else stays in the mid-upper 60s, of course DTW (& YIP) will briefly touch 70F.  How did they do it at DTW? The high was briefly, and I mean briefly, attained at 2:25pm

1pm: 65

2pm: 64

3pm: 68

4pm: 66

5pm: 61

6pm: 65

7pm: 64

8pm: 63

Despite coming in 2nd place for both record low and record low max, the mean temp for the day of 61F broke the old record of 63F from 1978, so technically, this was still the coldest July 28th on record for Detroit.

I will say that hoodies and jackets were seen all around today....and it sure felt like late September...really hard to believe its the dog days of summer!

Josh, do you have a weather station? Why not get one so you can compare your own house to metro.

I'm going to have one online soon... I have a cheapo I ordered for temporary usage, but I plan on putting a high end one up.

I still find it incredible that LAF was in the 40s for 3 mornings in 1988, a summer remembered for being blisteringly hot for the region.

Indeed.

Max/min temps for July 1-3, 1988. Nice splits.

July 1, 1988: 80º/47º

July 2, 1988: 85º/48º

July 3, 1988: 90º/49º

1983 was a pretty hot summer too, though it was mainly July and August...or after the back-to-back sub 50º mins that LAF pulled off early in that July.
