July 2013 General Discussion

Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

FWIW, 12z MEX has 52º for tomorrow and 53º for the 25th. MAV the same and MET reversed with a 53º and 52º. Pretty solid agreement.

IND overachieving today and hit 90º. Makes for the 5th one of the year.

To me it makes no sense why the output has the same temps more or less for tonight and tomorrow night. 850's are a little cooler tomorrow night and should have better radiational cooling, so I still say that tomorrow night beats tonight.

54º at LAF this morning.

SBN and VPZ both hit 50º. Two consecutive hourly readings of 50º at SBN, but looks like winds stayed up enough to prevent them from getting into the upper 40's.

But, daily record low min tied for SBN...joining 1904, 1932, and 1953. Good timing because all of the other daily low min records in July are sub 50º for South Bend.

52º at FWA, good for the 3rd lowest min temp on July 24:

46º in 1904...51º in 1911...52º in 2013...53º in 1948

Only 64 for a low here. Very difficult to get cold at night even with an air mass like this when you've got northerly winds blowing over a lake with surface temps in the upper 70s. We'd have to go calm or get light sw winds to get "cold" by summer standards.

Tonight should be our coolest night in the past 6-7 weeks. Biggest question in my mind is whether we can sneak below 50.

High res NAM shows mid 50's which seems reasonable. With dew points in the low 50's we might have a chance for the lower 50's but clouds over Western WI might be an issue.

Winds are already light here, so we shouldn't have a problem dropping pretty quickly after sunset.

This weather makes it feels like it's later in the year then it really is. lol

First sub 70° high in 20 days.

Skilling saying -7° below normal in the next 5 days.

07/24/13 lows

Here's a 14hr time lapse from last Friday when storms blew through at the end of the day.  Kind of an interesting day of transitions from a hot 96 degree day, to a stormy end along with some freaky orange colors as the sun sets.

Most cool beyond 2:45! Nice.

Wish the weather could stay like this till October 1 and then drop off as normal.

DVN discusses record possibilities....

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY...INCOMING RIDGE GRADIENT COULD DRIVE BRISK
NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH ON SAT...WHILE SINGLE
DIGIT H85 MB TEMPS ADVECT INTO THE REGION FRESH OUT OF CANADA.
CURRENTLY THE AIRMASS ADVERTISED BY THE MODELS TO MAKE IT DONE INTO
THE AREA SUPPORTS HIGHS ONLY IN THE UPPER 60S TO LOWER 70S FOR
SAT. MAY NOT GO QUITE THAT COOL FOR NOW BUT NOT MUCH WARMER EITHER
WITH HIGHS IN THE 70-75 DEGREE RANGE FOR MOST OF THE DVN CWA. IF
RIDGE CAN MAKE IT OVERHEAD FOR SFC WIND DECOUPLE AND CLEAR SKIES
SAT NIGHT...H85 MB RIDGE COLD RULE SUGGESTS MANY LOWS IN THE 40S TO
LOWER 50S FOR SUNDAY MORNING AND SEVERAL RECORD LOW TEMPS COULD BE IN
JEOPARDY FOR JUL 28TH.
RIDGE HANGS ON FOR A DRY AND CONTINUED
SEASONABLY COOL DAY IN THE 70S AGAIN FOR SUNDAY. MON MORNING LOWS IN
THE 50S.

Definitely a possibility  as heights start to build behind the upper level low and 850's still  in the single digits. I  think GRR mentioned mid-30's in one of their afd's...

As for tonight, winds have gone calm and we're sitting at 59.

Yeah Geos....had all the windows open last night and everyone in the house was dead asleep still at 6:30 this morning....normally my 5 year old is up tooling around in the kitchen by 5:45....fresh air / cool temp combo knocked everyone's socks off....loved it....although pretty weird feeling for July
