tamarack
AUG recorded 1.86" between 8A and 2P, and it's been pouring for the past 20-30 minutes. Seems likely they'll be over 3" before things begin to dry out.

bobbutts
I saw that headline on the cover of the POWDER... I haven't read the article yet, but should before I comment. Just looking at that graph though, it looks pretty darn similar with maybe less variability. Looks like business as usually up there I would suspect that if we're looking for data to support their hypothesis, the farther south and lower elevation, the greater the reduction. I'd like to see the same data for Wachusett and Camelback for example.
CoastalWx
Snow/snowpack will have greater variance, especially in the MA and srn ski areas. Obviously if you have frequent La Ninas, the srn ski areas will not do well at all. If there were to be any climate change..Tamarack is right about what Will said. They will probably see a boost in snow with the jet further north and the atmosphere able to hold a bit more moisture, but that really is only hypothetical. It's a rather small sample size to blame climate change and be able to rule out decadal oscillations.
wxeyeNH
Grand total of .68" with half of that falling in a brief heavy downpour around 3:30pm.

It's a rather small sample size to blame climate change and be able to rule out decadal oscillations. That's always been my thinking on the matter...if the jet lifts north and temps are warmer, we get more snow. It's the same reason why I don't want Jan/Feb to be -3F...it gets dry quickly with those cold temps. Even in warm winters that the valleys suffered through, the snowpack from 2000ft+ can be quite robust from the increase in moisture associated with the warmer/wet winters. Unfortunately, mountain climate records aren't very thorough with like 100 years of records...but Mansfield does have some of the longer term precip/temp data for a summit in New England. Aside from Mansfield and MWN, there really aren't any other real climate monitoring stations at significant elevation in the Northeast.

I think obs locations top out at about 1,700', in the Rangeley region. There's been "civilization" atop Sugarloaf for more than half a century, but I've never seen organized wx data from there - pity. Finished with 1.32", bringing August to 2.3", more than enough. 10 miles to my SSE in Mt. Vernon, over 4" was reported and Doppler estimates near Great Pond in Belgrade suggest even more there. AUG had 3.35".
Allenson
1.65" here with this last bout of rainfall. I heard reports of around 3" and some flooding around Piermont/Haverhill, NH--not far from here. Lovely morning unfolding today though--sun, a few clouds and a fresh breeze. OceanStWx
True story, we can never keep everybody happy. Had a call on the public line yesterday, "when are we going to get some warmer weather?" Hard to believe, but people still complain about a nearly perfect day.

My friend Keith or left WCSH used to tell me how people would call and get angry when he somehow "showed enthusiasm" for snow changing to rain. I guess you can understand why being in NNE. powderfreak
Winter is the worst. Half the people want snow for skiing and sledding, then other half can't stand it. We have to show no emotion...ha Yeah that really has to be a hard one...it's the same over here but I know Ski Vermont actually does quite a job wooing area meteorologists and on-camera mets. I think they do some stuff in the SNE markets too like send gifts and stuff. Meteorologists can impact thousands and thousands (probably millions over the course of a winter) of dollars of tourist revenue just by how they phrase the forecast. It's not even about the forecast itself, but how it's delivered. We discuss it at the ski resort all the time... instead of just saying its going to be absolutely frigid this weekend and to stay inside, a lot of BTV OCM mets have probably been nudged a bit to say things like "it will be chilly but also sunny and if you dress appropriately you can still take advantage of the great winter recreation in VT." We love how BTV is filled with snow-lovers and skiers, as a lot of AFD's in the winter reference winter recreation, snowmaking temperatures, snowfall at the ski resorts, stuff like that. They always make snow and winter sound like a positive....and thaws a negative.

So winter should be full of snow, otherwise I would live in FL. I try to find the positive in every forecast. If it's snowy I'll mention winter recreation, if it thaws I'll throw a bone for winter haters, and when things get serious I'll turn the emotion off and just state the facts. J.Spin
Per the recent discussion on delivery of the forecast, the Eye on the Sky meteorologists from the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium do some amazing work. They can deliver an informative five minute audio analysis on the upcoming short and mid range forecasts and you would never know what their bias was – or if they even have one. The information is somehow delivered in a cheerful and interesting way nonetheless. For those who haven’t heard them, they should listen in some time – all the daily forecasts and analyses can be found here: http://www.fairbanksmuseum.org/schedule An example of the most recent detailed analysis can be heard at the link below: http://www.vpr.net/xml/podcasts/comprehensive_forecast/eoscomprehensive.mp3 I think they set the standard for anti-hype. powderfreak
Man dew points have been on the increase today... at MVL at 12pm it was 74/48 and now at 7pm its 72/60. It is a noticable change to me... I can feel it and it actually made me look up what the dews were doing today.
