It's definitely Landvest. Just talked to them and they confirmed they managed it, but they aren't sure if anyone was out there yesterday.

Looking for hail in the middle of the woods is not easy. It's not like somebody can go out there today and find a tree down. It's possible, but the hail signature dominated those storms.

If it was of the intensity of the 8/30/07 Rome treekiller, it would be easy to locate - thousands of defoliated acres and roads covered with leaf salad the next day, and piles of water-gathered hailstones still visible 24 hr later.  Of course, that was a once-in-several-lifetimes event.  Any serious hail event (during leaf-on) is going to leave foliage scattered on the ground, and if it affects well-used woods roads, somebody is likely to take note of it.

Works for me. love those time lapses.

Weird.  I'm uploading the full original video now that should play for everyone and have much better quality.

Lots of cool stuff going on:

It looks like the clouds suddenly change direction and move toward the storms at :40

Pretty cool how blazing fast some of the scud crossed the view of the cam around :46

Kinda sad how the actual storm lasts about 2 seconds at this frame rate.

Those low clouds that suddenly appear after the storm, sink, and then vanish around  1:12 and especially 1:21 are awesome.

And of course the low foggy stuff rolling low over Red Hill.

Just talked to someone who reported seeing piles of mostly peas (some as large as nickels) still lying around the Spencer Pond area at 3 this afternoon.

The fact that all the folks I've talked to in Jackman have called it a bad storm in town tells me that it was worse to the NW. I just don't think anybody was there to witness it.

Great video Scott. From the beginning to about 1 minute the clouds were moving west to east. Once it started clearing there seemed to be some east to west movement almost causing the Cu to backbuild. Wonder why? Really interesting to see the line move in with cells moving NE missing you till one clobbered you. Great vid!

A photo from the Spine yesterday... awesome day with temps in the low 50s with a 20-30mph breeze out of the NW at times. Jacket weather.

88/70 right now in Thomasville, GA. Heading to the beach tomorrow and this weather is ok for that. 2 1/2 hour drive to Panama City. Water is warmer than New England beaches.

Cool video, Eek--love time lapse stuff.

Bummer on the topsoil, Wxeye.  Good luck.

Not much to report here for once.  I saw that line that went across NH & ME the other day:  it blossomed just east of here (literally a few miles) and then quickly marched off.  Otherwise, we've had a couple real nice days and cool nights.  Low 50s the past few mornings.  Can't find my shawl.  ;)

Received news today that the storms of July 19 included one that flattened 100+ acres on the northwest portion of Baxter Park (in the Scientific Forest Management Area) and caused lesser damage on adjacent areas.  Some damage also occurred on the Telos Unit of the Public Lands I work on.  Pictures from Baxter show essentially 100% blowdown/breakage in well-stocked softwood and mixedwood stands, damage consistent with gusts of 80+ mph.  Two pics also appear to show trees 100 yards or so apart having been pushed over in opposite directions, suggesting rotation.  CAR staff haven't confirmed that nor offered windspeed estimates yet.  Salvage harvesting is ongoing at Baxter where appropriate, and will also be done at Telos, though there it's on winter access and the salvage will occur as soon as the ground is sufficiently frozen.

Partly cloudy here in AUG, mid 70s with a nice breeze.  Might get another inch of rain overnight into tomorrow.  Just what we need - July finished with 6.67", making a 3-month total of 22.17".

Hydro seeded my back 1/2 acre this PM. I tried to time it before a cool fairly wet period without any severe weather. Seed should germinate within 5 days and once the rooted I should be all set and not have to worry a repeat of early this week!

Do u know if you can hydroseed over existing lawn? We have a lot of weeds and crabgrass from seeding back in april. Didnt turn out that well

Hey, mreaves... I lived in Panama City for 18 years...enjoy your time down there!  Use plenty of sunscreen...that pure white sand really reflects the sun.

I remember you mentioning that you had lived down here. We get down here every other year or so. I saw another VT car here in the condo complex we're staying at. They've had a lot of rain here this summer. Lot of ditches with standing water and soggy lawns. It was raining hard when we drove into town today but cleared up later in the afternoon. Hoping for a few more nice beach/golf days.

Rode home 40 miles in the pouring rain on my motorcycle yesterday.  Drowned-rat-city when I got home.

I was hoping it was going to hold off till later but alas no, lol.

Breeze really came up with the rains yesterday too--trees swaying, bike moving underneath me when I got hit with a cross-wind.

Trough-time now.

Dryslot, what's your total rainfall from Jan 1st? My VP2 is telling me 16.31" for the year. Some of this included melted snow since I get lazy about removing it before it melts, which means actual liquid rain is less. I thought you said you had accumulated 21" rain in the last 3 months? If true, my VP2 must be way off.

What's a good backup rain gauge to have?

I use this one here, Its made by Stratus As the tipper gauge on my station is not that accurate, No i have not accumalated that much rainfall here, May was 4.53", June 6.77" and July was 3.27"

You'll lose quite a bit of liquid by just letting the snow sit and rot/melt in the cone. You'll get undercatch while it's falling and then sublimation/evaporation after it's in there. In heavy snowfalls it will just fill up and overflow. Most of us use that Stratus rain gauge for CoCoRaHS for the winter and melt down cores from the new snowfall.
