ice1972
With the lack of shear there is really no separation between the updrafts and the downdrafts...the high amounts of cape have really helped support consistently growing updrafts, as well as cold pool moving just to our west, but eventually the downdrafts are just going to win out and cores will collapse and with instability probably beginning to wane some, cores will have a tough time really regenerating. So basically these things form and as they move into lower shear the forward progression of the downdraft slows down relative to the updraft and eventually snuffs it out.....am I getting that right? weatherwiz
So basically these things form and as they move into lower shear the forward progression of the downdraft slows down relative to the updraft and eventually snuffs it out.....am I getting that right? Well this afternoon shear was very, very weak across the entire region. Shear values didn't start improving until you got to NJ on south and even then it was jus bulk effective shear values that increased, vertical shear values were still very weak. Strong vertical shear values (>35-40 knots) allow the storms updraft to become separated from the downdraft, especially when you have high amounts of helicity. This allows for warm/moist air to continue feeding into the storm, allowing for the storm to maintain it's intensity or even intensify. When you have very weak vertical shear values (like today), there is very little separation between the updraft/downdraft...this means the area where the storm's updraft occurs, quickly gets downdraft, or outflow dominant and this prevents warm/moist air from feeding into the storm, allowing it to weaken. SlantStickers Anonymous
how large>?Sorry we were driving around, couldn't get a good measure because the hail let up when we went out to walk around but based on what was bouncing off the hood it looked about pea sized. On the drive back through Peabody we saw downed tree limbs frequently, and some *very* deep flooding of roads that don't flood very often. Still heavy rain and frequent lightning.
