HalloweenGale
I was looking at the online archive of the Inquirer and Mirror for March 1988, and found on the 22nd issue in the "Here and There" column the author mentions thunder snow: " Our first day of spring was simply spectacular here in Nantucket. We awoke to a cool 12 degrees. The sun peeking through the clouds. Then gradually the skies darkened. Suddenly, at about 11:45 AM there was a bright flash of lightning and a loud rumble of thunder. And then came a real squall! Until early afternoon the snow fell. First in light flurries and then so thickly and wind blown the visibility was nil. The wind was from the southwest at 25-30 mph until after noon when it stopped. Then, just as suddenly it returned at 12:25. Finally it cleared around three o'clock, after leaving us all with 1/4 inch of snow on the ground. The skies cleared- a deep blue with fluffy white puff balls. And we had a beautiful sunset, with an equally clear sky all night." Was this just an event for ACK or did all of SNE get in the game? ORH_wxman
It was sort of a WINDEX type event...a bit of a low formed on the shortwave dropping down. ORH had 1.2" of snow on that date. The next morning the low dropped to 6F which was the 2nd coldest low for that date and the day after set a record low for 3/22 with a low of 8F. They also set a record low max for the 21st with a high of 20F....very cold airmass. Ironically just a few days later, a record high was set on the 24th. I wonder if Nova Scotia got hammered by a major storm. We were trying to mark timber on a public lot about 25 miles west of PQI that day, and winds gusted 40+ with temps in the upper singles. Two months earlier we were in that area and it was even colder. CAR bottomed out at -20 and reported a wind chill of -85 (old scale), and at the Maine Forest Service building next to Portage Lake it was -32 that morning with the wind nearly steady (lee shore of the lake) at 30. CAR got up to -9 that aft. Where we were, 20 miles WNW of Ashland and 1,500' elev, probably topped out at -15 or so, with gusts still into the 30s. Frostbit my cheeks riding 2nd up on the sled at 4 PM as we returned to the pickup.

HalloweenGale
Hell, I was conceived somewhere near that time frame. Born a month early and within sight of the Fore River in Portland, Maine.
