Odd Radar Echo's around Huntsville/Redstone (6/4)

Anybody see this last night or know what it is? Apparently nobody saw anything in the sky and the leading cause (a radiation(10cm?) leak from a substation) has been ruled out. It has since dissipated. It showed up on both the Baron ARMOR radar and the WSR-88D.

UAH Huntsville is reporting on twitter they are finding "feathery" fiberglass chaff over the affected area.

Interesting...

What's the prevailing conspiracy theory then...

Now, seriously, what could that substance have come from, and why would there be so much of it to cause radar to "blow up?"

Redstone arsenal is located down there, I know Army Aviation operates in the area.

What was the altitude?

They said it went to 13,000 ft.. I haven't had the chance to get the level 2 data yet to see it fell from the top down or vice versa.

I know at least 1 type of aircraft in operation in that area is capable of altitudes > 20k MSL

Chaff is used in electromagnetic countermeasures, as the above images prove how it can alter RF signals. The current standard is aluminum impregnated fiberglass fibers, which sounds exactly like what was recovered.

Probably just an accidental discharge or weapons test at redstone.

That's pretty cool.

Speculation:

Redstone Arsenal is the home of the US Army Missile Command, it could have been some kind of missile defense testing, perhaps an attempt to shield ground targets from RF based weapons or sensors.

Well, if it was a missile defense test, I'm glad to see that it apparently worked.  Pretty sweet animation too, wxmeddler.
