How's Timmy's call? n/m, found it.

@SurfSkiWxMan: Tim Kelley: "we should not be surprised if two hurricanes impact New England between August 18 and September 21"

http://t.co/TKLV2UAisV

That looks to seriously bust.  We might not get 2 named hurricane the whole year (4 storms to date, none has become a hurricane)

Brian, this was discussed in the main Atlantic tropical activity thread. Take a look at at 1998, the first hurricane didn't form till August 30th and it was proceeded by 2 category 4 hurricanes and 1 category 5 (Gilbert, which at the time held the record for the lowest pressure recorded in the Atlantic basin till Wilma came along) Ironically enough they both hit Cancun as very intense hurricanes) for a more recent example check out 2010 which featured 9 hurricanes from September 8 onward.

It just blows my mind that everyone is not on Twitter. there is nowhere in the world you can get as much info, quickly, on any topic as you can on Twitter. It's literally one of the best things ever invented.

I'm actually not the biggest fan of it, but I admit I'm not an info maniac.

You can use an RSS aggregator pretty much the same way and pick your sources.  I like to pick my sources of info rather than have it be thrown at me.  You never know the validity of what what someone is putting out.  All they need to do it add a hash tag and the next thing you know you have false information.

Besides, I shouldn't have to go to a third party commercial website to get info from the NWS.  It's bad enough that companies send people there and to facebook to make those companies millions when they could post the same information on their own site and disseminate it from there but for our government to do it just irks me.

I can get all the info I want when I visit all the sites I use for weather and model info. I don't need someone to tell me the gfs is warm in the 11-15 day. The one thing twitter can be good for is late breaking sports info etc. Overall though I'm not

A big user like some are. I spend a lot of time on this board both posting and learning new things and I find it much more useful that way. People spend hours a day with their tweet decks monitoring news wires. If an earthquake happens in China, my life still goes on if I learn about it 20 minutes after the first tweet.

Exactly.  BTW, if earthquakes in China of concern for everyone, you can always monitor the USGS site and know about it below twitter tells you so.  (I know you're not!)  Like I said, most reliable sources have rss feeds and you can pretty much do the same thing as twitter.

I don't agree with any of that. But to each their own

Exactly...if you feel it's beneficial than more power to you but there are other useful ways to get what you find there and it is true that they make millions of dollars from other websites sending traffic to them that could otherwise stay on their site, especially our government.

yeah i'm with ya.

i can understand people not using it...like you said, to each their own...but i absolutely love it. i learn so much stuff on there and find so many crazy stories, videos etc.

and i find it's a great place to get varying opinions/interpretations on news, sports, weather because everyone posts links to their FB page or blog or website or whatever.

There is no right or wrong answer and there are certainly some good tidbits posted.

Then there are tweets from Kevin.

yeah exactly. it's like anything else.

similarly i really am not a fan of facebook, but i know some folks are essentially addicted to it.

one of the things i really appreciate about twitter is a lot of the information is unfiltered. of course, that can, and does, result in *a lot* of mis-information...but i think i get a better feel for news that way as very little of it is scripted stuff.

It's a great source if you keep an open mind, if you take things literal though than Twitter will misinform you as often as it teaches you something. Another unfortunate thing about it is that it's also a place that professionals weenie out a bit (sports stars, meteorologists and politicians alike) and the general public treat a Tweet the same way they would an article, on air forecast or official statement

i think like anything, you have to pick and choose and be mindful of what you are reading.

That's why I choose rss feeds so I can pick and choose what I want.  I don't have to find needles in a haystack. If I want something from X & Y, I don't have to look for it in in between A,B,C,D,E,etc.  You can get a wide range of content from traditional media outlets, blogs and even sites like this (see the icon in the lower left) all in one place.

twitter is fantastic with instant reports from breaking news, the tweets during Sandy were unreal and I am told saved some lives in NY

When things are unfolding there's absolutely nothing better. I check twitter every time I hear a popping noise:) in regards to anything being forecasted or projected you're always better off using a trusted site that pertains to that particular issue.

yeah but in general, RSS feeds lead to what I considered "filtered" content.

people don't have to like it, or use it...no biggie.

me, i find it extremely useful for so many things.

Breaking news is one thing but everyday content is another and that's why I have a problem with weather.gov sites sending people there for something that they could post on their site.

Beat part of twitter is constant sports tweets and news.

Bingo! There's only one way of interpreting what's already happening (unless you're deliberately misinforming people) but when it comes to extrapolating things, any opinionated know it all will post what he thinks and at that point you're much better off looking at a trusted site.
