Tony,

Your moles have apparently accomplished the near impossible!! They are an absolute godsend! I eagerly bow down to them. Somehow, a near miracle has occurred. As of 5 PM, the highest at KATL was only 91!! It looks like it hit 91 before 2 PM, just before 3 PM, and around 4 PM. I can't believe that it hit 91 before 2 PM and never reached 92. OMG, is this a great day or what?!

I guess we're not 100% in the clear just yet for today However, the odds are very heavily in KATL's favor to not rise back enough to get to 92 today. I'd say the odds are near 99%. It was 87 at 5 PM and 89 at 6 PM. I'll be monitoring to make sure that that awful 92 that the moles hate doesn't surprise us.

Assuming we get through the next hour or so unscathed, we're still not in the clear yet for this week. We may still have to sweat out tomorrow. As I mentioned, however, there are encouraging signs regarding convection tomorrow to keep the high below 92. FFC had earlier lowered the forecast high for KATL from 92 to 90.

Keep hope alive! I love being a messenger of good news for a change (for those who don't like it hot) as it is good for my life expectancy.

My walk tonight, which is being specially dedicated to Tony's moles, is going to be such an enjoyable one despite the humidity!

Edit: KATL back down to 88 at 7 PM. It looks like the moles have really done it, folks. Wx history. Special mole walk time!

Edit: As of 8 PM, the KATL high remained at 91. One day down and one more to go. I can now safely say that the moles have OFFICIALLY accomplished the near impossible. It is good to be a mole.

Day 2 of "Keep the 92+'s away at KATL: Moles, please do whatever you can do!

Folks,

I'm really sweating it today (no pun intended). The moles are badly needed to provide their valued services once more. Skies are mostly sunny with a gusty, hot west wind at KATL. Sig. clouds may not show up for a couple of more hours. It was 87 at noon at KATL, which is the same as yesterday, when it hit the high of 91 the first time between 1 and 2 PM. Today, the TD is 2 degrees lower, which I would think, if anything, would slightly favor the slightly warmer side. Yesterday, KATL rose to 89 as of 1 PM. It wouldn't surprise me if it gets to as hot as 90. If so, a 92+ high would then be very likely..probably 95% chance. However, if it is only 89 like yesterday and more clouds and convection could get going by ~ 2 PM, the moles may have just enough power to keep the 92+ away like they did yesterday. So, we've got another nailbiter, which is very hard to take!

Edit: 1 PM only up one degree to 88 vs. yesterday's 89! This is pretty encouraging. Keep hope alive and keep the 92 away! Come on moles, clouds, and thunderstorms! Do your magic, please!

Larry, it's 87 on the dot here at just past 2:00, and I'm getting a lot of clouds over the sun, so I don't see hitting 90 here, but I'm leaving for a few hours, and can't crack the mole whip, so you're on your own for the afternoon.  It looks like the line in Tenn won't get here  'til dark, but as long as the moles don't celebrate their success yesterday too much, we'll all be ok, I figure.  If they are giggling and singing when I get home, we are probably going to have trouble, lol.  T

Folks/moles.

Tony, how can you leave at such a crucial time? I guess you have a lot of faith in the moles doing their thing on their own. That is a tribute to their owner, Mr. T.

At 2 PM, it rose to 90 at KATL with that then being the high. However, somehow something very magical occurred and it fell back to 89 at 3 PM! I know that the moles are the main reason, but also realize the relatively moist soils are probably also helping. There are still several more hours to sweat, but KATL is still in the no-92 ballgame! Keep hope alive and appreciate Tony's moles for their efforts. :) :)

Edit: At 4 PM, it rose back to 90 at KATL. The game is still going. The moles' efforts will be rewarded whether successful or not. My fingernails and toenails have all disappeared now.

Finally, cumulus clouds (aka the mole's best friends) have increased markedly here on the northside of ATL. That, in itself is a good sign. We'll see.

Edit #2: As of 4 PM, the official highest was 91 at 2:40 PM. As mentioned, it was 90 at 4 PM. I just saw that it was back down to 88 at 5 PM! So, the game is still going but things are looking brighter. There still could be sweating til as late as 7 PM. Whereas clouds have decreased here on the northside temporarily, they look to be finally temporarily increasing near KATL to the south. Perhaps that lead to that 5 PM cooling.

At 6 PM, it had warmed back up to 89. IF 92 hasn't happened yet, the chances of it happening today are now quite slim. With it having been 90 at 4 PM, there is a small chance that it rose to 92 between 4 and 5 PM, when it was mostly sunny. So, it isn't yet time for the mole celebration. The final answer will not come til 8 PM. However, I do plan to dedicate today's walk (wx permitting) to the moles as I was unable to walk yesterday.

I just looked up the soil moisture anomaly for KATL and it is at +80 mm, which is wetter than 95% of the lower 48 and is undoubtedly helping to keep KATL from heating up rapidly:

Sorry about that.  The furry guys have groupies now, after yesterday.  I had to go off this afternoon...        there was a party.  I hear things got our of control up your way Larry.  You just have to be careful building their egos especially now, with groupies, they'll be impossible.  But I have to say ThunderGasm 2013 is a roaring success so far :)  71 after the nice gust front came by with some rain, and the rest.  And standing out in it I can feel the cold air that made these things pop.  Very cool!  T

Somehow all the rain managed to miss mby     On another note...it's gonna be an awesome June day here tomorrow with the high in the mid 80's, a North wind and plenty of sunshine    ^_^

T,

It is official. KATL, with the help of your fury critters, held at 91 for a high for the 2nd day in a row! Celebration time!! Climowise, not one day 7/1+ at KATL has exceeded 96 when the highest as of 6/30 was 91 or lower since 1950! I think these two days were great real case example of moist soils keeping the heat under control and two degrees under the MeteoStar GFS projections of 93 both days. What's fascinating about that is that the GFS as per MeteoStar is almost always cold biased for highs! The good news is that there are no similarly hot days in sight on the recent GFS runs. That would take us out to nearly 6/30 if it verifies!

So, despite still not having power over three hours (I still haven't opened my fridge/freezer), I'm in a great mood. Thank you moles!

Larry, if you square the damage, trees down, lines and poles in road so you can't move. Add ice. Keep the power off for two weeks, and add a whole nights sheer terror, then you have Atlanta 73, lol. And you see why I'd rather not see that again.

Glad the temps held down. I still haven't seen a 90 in my yard. Looks like the weekend is some cooler. I look forward to nice cool summer, with lots of thunder and rains. I got .6 tonight. Tony

0.27". There are medium to large branches all over the place including one in the powerlines near my driveway but I did not lose power. I was driving west on I-40 when I got hit by the wind gustfront. Impressive. It looked like a wall of green coming at me and I saw a few trees topple near 40/540.

Just got back from the beach and was able to check the stats here IMBY.  I now have close to 8.5 inches of rain for the month of June, and I hit a high of 94.5 F earlier this week.  The rainfall, on a month by month basis, is just crushing my totals from last calendar year.

So far this year is a lawnmower killer.
