Why are some T-storms louder than others?

Given T-storm season is upon us, I thought this was a pertinent and interesting article by Dr. Forbes.

Justifies the experiences that many of us have had -- loud overnight convection.

Outside of that, positive CG lightning strikes also seem to me to be a lot louder and more violent.

I actually thought this thread title was a joke...until I read that article.  Just always assumed that the thunder was louder because (duh) the lightning strike was closer.  Now, (duh) to the (duh).  Cool article. 

 

Of course, the thunder always rolls up this way....
